Robinson’s • This week, I am happy to honor and recognize my next City Champion - Jack Hanagriff. Jack has been a bridge builder between Houston communities and the Rail industry for decades. His career at the City of Houston spanned 40 years, serving as a Law Enforcement Officer for the first 21 of those years. He later worked with the Mayor’s Office on Crime Reduction Strategies, the FRA to focus on collision crossings and trespassing incidents, ran programs within the Houston Urban Area Security Initiative and led several Homeland Security technology solutions projects during his tenure. He finished out his career with the City after working on the Smart City initiatives with the Mayors Office of Innovation. Jack now heads Road and Rail Safety at the East End District and continues to impact Houston with his meaningful work. Most notably, a Safety Action Plan that will evaluate infrastructure shortfalls to create a model of safety continuity in the District. He also works in partnership with by implementing a ‘Crossing By-Pass Study’ used to examine regularly blocked crossings and evaluate alternative routes to enhance the user experience. All this and much, MUCH more is why we have selected Jack this week and we thank him for all he does. 🚂👏

• Yesterday, I attended the Grand Opening of Bezos Academy Houston-South Side. Led by Mike George, President of Bezos Academy in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Education and Youth Engagement, this pre school is located at the New Hope Housing Reed Family Center. Together, their mission is to provide historically under-resourced communities with access to education. Through this partnership, Bezos Academy will be able to cover costs of all educational supplies, including three meals a day. Wow! 👏 What an incredible week.

First Lady Barbara Bush was a pioneer and advocate in the literacy movement across the nation for decades. She believed reading, writing and comprehending is a fundamental human right. Today and the Bush Family recognized her hard work and vision with a beautiful bronze statue at the Barbara Bush Literacy Plaza. I am so grateful my colleagues and I had the opportunity to honor her dedication and lifetime of achievements. Let this statue be a reminder of her legacy and vision - Literacy for all. 📚📖

This morning, I had the privilege of providing remarks at the Elevate Charter School Ribbon Cutting at St. James Episcopal Church in Historic Third Ward. One of my favorite parts was the 1st and 2nd grade students stellar performances. A student even said he wanted to be an architect one day, which of course touched my heart. All this great work is possible due to the valiant efforts of Founder, Rebecca Francis Jones, Rev. Victor Thomas, Board President Dr. Patrick Jefferson and John Sun, President and CEO of Texas Charter School Development. What a great morning reflecting on the importance of education and quality learning in the Historic Third Ward. This is a true asset everyone can be proud of. 👏 Elevate Collegiate Charter School

The highlight of the week was spending time with the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation. Over the weekend, I was among my colleagues TX State Rep. Jarvis Johnson, Congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, and Harris County Pct. 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones, at their annual Labor Day Breakfast. It is important we recognize organizations like these and the people who work hard all year round. I was grateful to honor and celebrate them. I hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day. 🇺🇸
