(4/10) Mentorship is so important for new business owners, and one of the people who helped me get started was Tiko Reynolds-Hausman. At that time she worked for Houston Metro Transit Authority.
I was hustling around the state, attending every event, workshop and seminar out there. Tiko would help and tell me events I should be at and try to push my business. I was like a sponge trying to figure everything out! I went to every trade show that I could, and my character and the way I looked was part of my brand. I’m short, black, and cute. I always wore a backpack—how could anyone forget me? That was me advertising my business.
Tiko invited me to participate in the Interagency Mentor Protege Program. I learned a wealth of information about running a business—everything from processes and procedures to accounting to how to write an RFP. I owe a lot of our success to her.

Urban Circle wasn't very glamorous in the early days. All I had to start my business was a laptop, a cell phone, and my first office, which was in this little house in the heart and soul of 5th Ward Texas. A few years later when cds were on the decline, I bought my own printing equipment so I could make t-shirts, but nobody was buying them.
I was so clueless about how this worked that I called and told them my story and asked if I could place orders to have discount mugs shipped to my customers. And that’s not how any of that works normally. Little did I know how much things were going to change in the best way.

(2/10) After college, I got involved in the music industry. This is really where my business got its start. My first client was Dirty 3rd Records, and I represented other labels such as Swisha House, Boss Hogg Outlawz, and Trill Entertainment. Music played a vital part in starting my business. I have always been inspired by connecting people through music.
It all started when I was working at Kraft foods part-time. The owner of Dirty 3rd Records approached me about a problem with a sales rep in Dallas. He wanted to bring me in to recover market share in Dallas. I said yes and decided I would get him better representation for his label by calling mom and pop retail stores who were selling cds. Six weeks later, I got my first check. I still remember that it was for $225.
One of the music stores I was servicing informed the owner of Boss Hogg Outlawz about my company, and they became my next client. Next came Swisha House, ABN and many others—I was on my way.
