Watching the conversations surrounding the upcoming Michael film has me thinking deeper than music, celebrity, or entertainment.
It has me thinking about childhood… and how many inner-city youth never truly get one.
So many children grow up in survival mode instead of discovery mode.
Trauma becomes normal.
Hypervigilance becomes personality.
Silence becomes protection.
By the time many of us become adults, people only recognize the behaviors… but never stop to ask what happened underneath them. That’s where PTSD often hides.
The story of Michael Jackson has always reflected a complicated reality: extraordinary talent shaped alongside pressure, pain, performance, and lost innocence. And while most people will never live the life of a global superstar, many young people from marginalized communities understand what it feels like to grow up too fast.
Some children are raising siblings.
Some are surviving violence.
Some are navigating addiction, incarceration, abandonment, instability, or grief before they even understand their own emotions.
A lot of our youth don’t lose their childhood in one dramatic moment.
They lose it slowly… through chronic stress, fear, and having to become emotionally older than their age demands.
That’s why conversations around trauma matter.
That’s why healing matters.
And that’s why giving our young people safe spaces to simply be children matters.
PTSD is not always born on a battlefield.
Sometimes it’s born in neighborhoods where survival becomes the curriculum.

This month, we celebrate the legacy, resilience, brilliance, and contributions of Black leaders, families, and communities who have shaped history and continue to shape our future.
At Mumineen Community Development Corporation (MCDC), Black History Month is more than remembrance, it is a reminder of our responsibility to uplift, serve, and create pathways of opportunity for those who have been historically overlooked and underserved.
We honor the shoulders we stand on.
We recognize the work still to be done.
We recommit ourselves to justice, equity, and community impact.
May this month inspire us all to learn, reflect, and act in ways that build stronger futures for generations to come.
