About our cover photo: Although perhaps best known for her anti-lynching crusade as a journalist and her work for African American civil rights, Ida B. Wells also worked for years for women's suffrage. She co-founded one of the most important Black suffrage organizations in Chicago, the Alpha Suffrage Club, to further voting rights for all women, to teach Black women how to engage with civic issues, and to work to elect African Americans to city offices.
