Day two and the highs and lows of tracking deer are in full swing. Some tracks are straight forward, others not so much. This morning we headed out looking for a deer hit a little too far back last night. He was jumped from his bed by the hunter at the 200 yard mark about 2 hours after the shot. It rained hard post shot and a little over night. We searched but came up empty. Finding no new sign. Is this deer going to die? Probably. Where though, is the question. Some deer lay right back down if not pushed, others can go a long way before feeling safe enough to do so. Did we miss something in the waist high briars? Maybe. Did the deer walk much further than expected before laying down getting completely out of our search perameters? Also very possible. Some of these stomach hit deer can live for 12-24 hours or more post shot, depending on exact wound location and size of the wound. Ideally, if you know you hit too far back, it’s best to not track at all initially.
