Statement from Jackson County Legislator Jalen Anderson on Ordinance 6124
Today, the Jackson County Legislature passed Ordinance 6124, repealing the County’s existing conversion therapy ordinance and replacing it with protections against dangerous therapeutic practices.
This action follows prior and ongoing engagement with members of the LGBTQ+ community, advocates, mental health professionals, and other stakeholders about how Jackson County can continue protecting people from harmful practices while responding to the changing legal landscape. Those conversations continued today with representatives from PROMO, whose input has been valuable as we determine the best path forward.
Ordinance 6124 is a stopgap measure, not the end of this work. The new ordinance prohibits dangerous therapeutic practices that pose a substantial risk of serious physical or psychological harm while we continue working with the community to review and strengthen these protections.
Repealing the existing ordinance is also expected to resolve the pending lawsuit challenging that law, with a hearing still to come. This allows Jackson County to avoid devoting additional public resources to defending an ordinance that has now been replaced while ensuring that protections against dangerous practices remain in place.
Our commitment has not changed. We will continue engaging LGBTQ+ residents, advocates, mental health professionals, legal experts, survivors, and other community members as we determine how these protections can be strengthened and made as effective and legally durable as possible.
