Living in Arizona means fire personnel must always be ready for the swift water rescues that come with monsoon season. Training focuses on understanding rope systems, proper throw bag deployment, reading the current, and giving clear instructions to the person being rescued. Communication during these incidents can make all the difference.
Arizona also has the βStupid Motorist Law,β which applies when a driver ignores barricades or warning signs and enters a flooded roadway, later requiring rescue from the vehicle or roadway.
When monsoons hit, please stay out of flooded areas for your own safety. If you ever find yourself needing rescue in moving water, listen carefully to instructions: reach for the rope when directed, or keep your hands up until rescuers can safely secure you and bring you to shore.
Remember: Turn Around, Donβt Drown.
