Knox County Legislative Wrap-Up Town Hall Highlights
Knox County residents gathered for a Legislative Wrap-Up Town Hall to hear from state lawmakers about the recently concluded legislative session. Topics included roads, election integrity, veterans, education, artificial intelligence, illegal immigration, and party unity.
Roads and Infrastructure
Transportation was a major topic throughout the evening. Representative Becky Massey discussed efforts to secure funding for road projects and improve road materials. Representatives Dave Wright and Jason Zachary emphasized the state’s commitment to transportation funding while noting East Tennessee’s infrastructure needs must remain a priority.
Election Integrity
One of the most applauded discussions centered on Democratic crossover voting in Republican primaries. Senator Richard Briggs and Representative Jason Zachary discussed legislation to close Tennessee’s primaries, which passed the Senate but failed in a House subcommittee. Both credited grassroots activists for advancing the issue and expressed optimism the effort will return in 2027.
Veterans and Military Families
Senator Briggs addressed concerns about veterans’ services and highlighted Tennessee’s property tax relief program for disabled veterans. He also praised local efforts to assist homeless veterans. Representative Becky Massey discussed legislation helping military families transfer professional licenses more easily when moving to Tennessee.
Education and AI
Representative Jason Zachary praised University of Tennessee President Randy Boyd’s leadership and discussed recent tenure reforms. Zachary also spoke about his work on Tennessee’s Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee and the growing role of AI in healthcare and other industries.
Illegal Immigration
Lawmakers discussed several immigration-related bills passed this session, including measures strengthening E-Verify requirements, requiring English-language driver’s license exams, and expanding cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
Government Regulations and Party Unity
Senator Briggs discussed efforts to reduce unnecessary regulations on businesses and citizens. The evening concluded with remarks about party unity and appreciation for the leadership of Knox County Republican Party Chairman Martin Daniel.
The town hall provided residents with an opportunity to engage directly with their elected officials and discuss issues affecting Knox County, East Tennessee, and the state as a whole.
