What we've lost.

The water Roswell and Alpharetta drink starts up here. Big Creek runs south out of Forsyth into the Chattahoochee, and it's what's called a small water supply watershed, which means it's fragile. Georgia caps how much of it you're allowed to pave over, rooftops, roads, parking lots, at 25 percent. Past that line the water quality starts to break down, and it doesn't come back easily.

In 1995, about 15 percent of that watershed was covered.

Today we're at the ceiling. The county's own estimate is 20.5 percent. Smart Growth Forsyth County, the local group that's tracked this since 2009, says we've already crossed 25 and gone over the legal limit. Either number tells you the same thing: we're nearly out of room, and that's before you count everything that's been approved but not yet built.

To their credit, the commission voted unanimously last night to extend the residential rezoning freeze another six months. That's the right call, and I'm glad they did it. But that freeze has been in place for 18 months, and we still hit the limit. A pause only stops what hasn't been approved yet. It can't undo the subdivisions already built, or the ones already approved and waiting to break ground. The damage is already done, and a freeze doesn't pull it back.

This is what unchecked growth actually costs. Every acre we pave is an acre that used to soak up the rain. Now that water runs straight off, into the creek behind your house and into the supply we drink from.

The county commission controls this. The impervious limit, the stream buffers, whether a variance gets waved through, whether a developer has to prove their project won't push us over before it's approved. All of it is a vote on one dais.

I'm running to require that proof before we approve, not after we flood. Growth is why my family is here. But we're at the edge of something we can't take back, and the five people on that dais decide whether we stop at the line or blow right through it.

One of those seats is on your ballot, and early voting is open right now through October 30th. Election Day is November 3rd.
