During this period of low legislative output as the Michigan House 103rd legislative term comes to a close, I would like to re-affirm my commitment to prioritizing affordability for Michiganders. It is a frustrating time for most - many of us and our families are living paycheck to paycheck with questions lingering about essential costs like gas, housing, food, all having increased significantly in the past ten years or so. My legislative goals are clear: continue to cut back the state's oversized budget, lower taxes, pave the way for competitive, private interests to let the free market lower costs, and keep our state government from overregulating, overreaching, and nickel and diming its residents. We can and will improve Michigan's quality of life.

I want to provide an update on one of my legislative efforts from earlier this term - a policy topic that has risen to the level of national conversation as of late. HBs 5492-5493, at the state level, are intended to appropriately regulate automated license plate readers (ALPRs), an emerging technology that brings with it many concerns about government overreach and breach of privacy. Given the recent bi-partisan hearing by the Federal Senate Judiciary Committee and companies like Flock changing their internal data-retention policy, it is time for the Michigan Legislature to re-examine these issues. My hope is to find strong compromise and pass these bills before the end of this term.

Today in Families and Veterans, we heard testimony from various interest groups and individuals about HBs 6320-6322, Theresa's Law. It is a bill package aimed at improving protections for adults in foster care facilities. Increasing training for staff that work in these facilities is an important step in safeguarding vulnerable adults. It also further expands the requirements for ensuring the physical, emotional, and the mental health needs of patients is met. It is a bill I hope to see pass.

An unprecedented, landmark achievement; and a step in the right direction:

For those who may not know, one of three functioning nuclear power plants in Michigan is being recommissioned. The Palisades Nuclear Power Plant, located alongside the Lake Michigan shoreline, is making history: it will be the first nuclear power plant in our country's history to be recommissioned. The plant has the capacity to generate enough energy to power 800k homes on the west side of Michigan and will also save 600 jobs. Nuclear power is the future of clean, renewable energy; it will increase production and efficiency, all on a smaller scale than alternative clean energy. Most importantly, it will help to drive down energy costs and keep our environment clean.

Rep. Wozniak supports House investigation into blocked citizen voting initiative

State Rep. Doug Wozniak this week supported the creation of a new House select committee that will examine the review process for the Americans for Citizen Voting petition after more than 700,000 signatures were submitted but the proposal did not advance to the November ballot.

The proposed constitutional amendment would require individuals voting in Michigan elections to prove they are U.S. citizens.
“When more than 700,000 Michiganders sign a petition asking for an issue to be put before voters, we owe it to them to make sure the process was fair and accurate,” said Wozniak (R-Shelby Township). “There are legitimate questions about what happened here, and Michigan residents deserve answers.”

The Michigan Board of State Canvassers spent nearly seven hours Monday reviewing the petition before deadlocking on whether the campaign had collected enough valid signatures to meet the required threshold of 446,198.

The determination centered on a sample of 1,000 petition signatures reviewed by election officials. According to the Bureau of Elections, the petition fell just short of the number of valid signatures needed within that sample to qualify for certification.

Wozniak said he supports the select committee’s efforts to examine how signatures were selected and reviewed and whether changes are needed to make the process more transparent and understandable.

“People put a tremendous amount of time and effort into Michigan’s citizen petition process because they believe their voices can make a difference,” Wozniak said. “When questions arise about how that process is carried out, we have a responsibility to get the facts and make sure people can have confidence in the system.”

Rep. Wozniak votes to crack down on corporate influence in Michigan politics

State Rep. Doug Wozniak this week voted to get money out of politics by blocking state-regulated utilities and companies with major government contracts from donating to political campaigns and candidates.

The state House approved the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics (MMOP) citizen-initiated proposal after more than half a million Michigan residents signed petitions supporting the effort.

“People should have a stronger voice in their government than corporations with deep pockets,” said Wozniak (R-Shelby Township). “More than half a million Michiganders made their voices heard on this issue, and I was proud to stand with them. This is about putting the people we represent first, not powerful special interests.”

The citizen-initiated proposal still needs to be approved by the state Senate, which did not hold session this week. The proposal must be approved in the coming days, or it will be placed before Michigan voters in the November election.

As part of our budget dealings, the 10-bill package designed to lower health care costs and expand access was officially signed into law last week. This includes providing coverage for prenatal care under Medicaid; allowing Michigan to join the Physical Therapy and Licensure Compact; allowing Michigan to join the Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact; allowing Michigan to join the Physician Assistant Licensure Compact, all of which should facilitate lower costs and ease barriers of entry for those already licensed to provide care. This is an important win in an industry that demands intense regulation, but not so much as to hamper health care providers with unnecessary red tape.
