1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment took over Musa Qal’eh Afghanistan from Britain’s Household Cavalry Regiment in March 2010. Serving alongside my fellow Marines through the next seven months will always be one of the most challenging yet proudest times of my life. Proudest mostly of the men of extreme valor, courage, and bravery that I had the honor of serving with. Challenging because 11 years ago we discovered our mostly undefined “counterinsurgency” mission was impossible to achieve.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have made it clear that Soldiers need to frequently train in mock villages or towns to prepare for battle before they deploy, Siegel said.

There’s been a growing consensus among veterans groups in Washington that a full withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan is long overdue. Last year, Concerned Veterans for America, a conservative advocacy group, made ending the post-Sept. 11 wars a legislative priority — a policy agenda it shared with more progressive veterans groups on the left, like VoteVets and Common Defense.

The troops had been on a mission to clear al-Shabaab from contested areas as well as villages the militants controlled, “and establish a permanent combat outpost” to expand the reach of the Somali state, the U.S. military’s Africa Command said in a statement.
