🐾 The Long-Term Effects of Shelter Life 🐾
From the Humane Society of St. Thomas

First — let us say this loud and clear: our volunteers and staff pour their hearts into every single dog that walks through our doors. 💙 They walk them. They love them. They talk to them. They advocate for them. They become their people while they wait.

But even with all that love… shelter life is still shelter life.

And long-term stays can take a toll.

Here’s what happens when dogs spend extended time in a shelter environment:

🐶 Chronic Stress
Even in the best shelters, constant noise, new smells, barking, and changing routines can keep a dog’s nervous system on high alert.

🐶 Anxiety & Barrier Frustration
Living behind kennel doors can cause dogs to become overstimulated. Some begin jumping, spinning, or barking excessively — not because they’re “bad,” but because they’re overwhelmed.

🐶 Emotional Shutdown
Some dogs go the opposite direction. They withdraw. They stop making eye contact. They lie quietly in the back of their kennel. These are often the dogs people overlook.

🐶 Decline in Social Skills
Without consistent home routines and one-on-one time, even the sweetest dog can start to struggle with basic manners.

🐶 Loss of Hope
Yes, dogs feel discouragement. When adopters pass them by again and again, it shows.

The truth is… shelters were never meant to be permanent homes. They are meant to be stepping stones.

That’s where YOU come in. 💙

🏡 Adopt. Don’t Shop.
When you adopt, you’re not just getting a dog — you’re freeing a kennel and giving a life a second chance.

🐾 Foster When You Can.
Even a short-term foster break can:
• Lower stress hormones
• Improve behavior
• Help us learn more about the dog
• Increase adoption chances

Sometimes just one weekend in a home can change everything for a dog who’s been waiting.

Our Coconut Retrievers are resilient. They are loving. They forgive quickly. They just need someone to choose them.

If you’ve ever considered adopting… now is the time.
If you can’t adopt… consider fostering.
If you can’t foster… share their stories.

It truly takes a village — and here on St. Thomas, we are that village. 🏝️💛

Because no dog should grow up behind kennel doors.

Pictured below is Andrew. This sweet nugget arrived at the Shelter as just a puppy with a severe case of mange. Our amazing Vet team got him healed and looking great. But he continues to grow up in a shelter. He desperately needs a home and a family of his own. He’s heartworm negative. He’s great with other dogs and great with kids.
