Here is an irrigation pump intake pipe on the San Joaquin River completely covered with invasive Golden Mussels. The buildup restricts farmers’ ability to irrigate crops and is an important reminder of how quickly these mussels can impact the infrastructure we rely on every day.
Golden Mussels threaten our waterways, agriculture, drinking water systems, flood control infrastructure, local jobs, and the food supply we all depend on. Once established, they are extremely difficult and expensive to control.
Prevention and early detection are critical. Clean, Drain, and Dry your boats!

We appreciate the thoughtful conversations and community engagement during the Meyers Permanent Inspection Station Open House on May 4. Thank you to everyone who joined partners from El Dorado County Tahoe Planning and Building Division, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, Tahoe Resource Conservation District, and California Tahoe Conservancy to learn more about this important effort.

Development of permanent inspection stations will help meet the inspection and decontamination requirements needed to protect Lake Tahoe from invasive golden mussels and other emerging aquatic invasive species threats.

The draft environmental document is available for public review and comment through today, May 15, 2026.

Project documents and additional information can be found at TahoeBoatInspections.com/Meyers.
