Why is Friday the 13th considered unlucky?

The honest historical answer is that no one knows for certain.

For centuries, Friday and the number 13 each carried separate superstitions in parts of Western culture. However, historians have found little evidence that people commonly combined them into “Friday the 13th” until the 1800s.

The superstition became much more widely known after Thomas W. Lawson published his 1907 novel, *Friday, the Thirteenth*. The story featured a Wall Street broker who used people’s fear of the date to create financial panic.

You may have also heard that the belief began when King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar on Friday, October 13, 1307. That event happened, but historians have not established it as the true origin of the superstition.

The unlucky date even changes depending on where you live. In many Spanish-speaking cultures, Tuesday the 13th—*martes trece*—is feared instead. In Italy, Friday the 17th traditionally carries the unlucky reputation.

So, is Friday the 13th truly unlucky, or is it simply a fascinating piece of folklore passed down through generations?

Are you superstitious? Do you consider 13 lucky or unlucky? Tell me below! 🍀🐈‍⬛

Happy Grandparents Day! 💜

Grandparents are often the keepers of our family stories, traditions and memories. They teach us recipes, life lessons, patience and resilience—sometimes without even realizing how deeply those lessons will stay with us.

Many grandparents are also helping raise their grandchildren, providing rides, attending activities, offering childcare and quietly holding their families together. Today, let’s make sure they know that their love and sacrifices are seen.

Call them. Visit if you can. Bring them a meal, help with a task or simply sit and ask them to tell you a story from their younger years. Those stories are pieces of history that can disappear if we do not take the time to listen.

We also remember the grandparents who are no longer with us and remain grateful for the love and wisdom they left behind.

And to every step-grandparent, chosen grandparent, older neighbor or mentor who has lovingly filled that role—today celebrates you, too.

What is one lesson your grandparent taught you that you still carry today? Please share it below. 💜

Twenty-five years ago today, our nation was forever changed.

On Patriot Day, we remember every life taken on September 11, 2001. We hold close the families who continue to carry that loss, the survivors, the first responders and rescue workers, and those who later became ill or died because of their service at the recovery sites.

Many young people today were not yet born on September 11, 2001. It is our responsibility to teach them not only about the tragedy, but also about the extraordinary courage, compassion and unity shown in the hours, days and months that followed.

Today is not about politics. It is about remembrance, service and standing together as Americans. Let us honor those we lost by caring for one another, supporting our first responders and choosing unity over division.

May God comfort the families who still grieve and bless everyone who answered the call to help.

Do you remember where you were when you first heard what was happening? If you feel comfortable, please share your memory below so we can remember together.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Labor Day is a time to honor working people and the generations who fought for fair pay, safer workplaces, reasonable hours and dignity on the job.

As a nurse, I know firsthand that illness and the need for care do not pause for a holiday. Neither do emergencies, farming, transportation, utilities, public safety or many of the services our communities rely on.

While many of us enjoy a cookout or a well-earned day off, others will still be clocking in. This year, let’s do more than simply thank them.

If someone in your family, a friend or a neighbor has to work, bring them a meal or pack them a plate. Save them a piece of pie, cake or another favorite treat so they have something special waiting when they come home. Send a kind message and remind them that they have not been forgotten.

A small act of thoughtfulness can make a long shift feel a little lighter.

To everyone working this Labor Day: thank you for keeping Harrison County cared for, fed, safe, connected and moving. Your work is seen, appreciated and important. 💜

Today is International Day of Charity—a reminder that meaningful change happens when people come together and give what they can.

Here in Harrison County, one way we can make a difference is by supporting the Harrison County Humane Society of Iowa. They provide shelter for homeless and unwanted dogs and cats, assist with spaying and neutering, care for strays and work to reunite lost animals with their owners.

Their Rescue Ride fundraiser is coming up on Saturday, September 19. All funds raised go directly toward animal care, including spay and neuter assistance, vaccinations and emergency care for animals of Harrison County Humane Society.

You do not have to be a motorcycle rider or make a large donation to help. Donate an auction item, create a basket, participate in the ride, place a bid, share the event or simply show up. Every act of support matters.

Animals cannot ask us for help, so they depend on organizations like this—and those organizations depend on all of us.

Please mark your calendar, invite a friend and show up for the Harrison County Humane Society. Together, we can help give local animals the care and second chances they deserve. 💜🐾
