Big news for our community‼️ .S. News & World Report just named Bullis Charter School the No. 1 charter middle school in California❗️
BCS also ranks No. 2 among the state’s 846 charter elementary schools and in the top 0.1% of all California elementary and middle schools. This recognition belongs to our students and the teachers who know them best, and to every family who has been part of BCS over more than 20 years. Thank you!

Middle school teachers are preparing for the first of this year’s 3 Intersessions that starts next week. This BCS hallmark program facilitates learning outside the four walls of a classroom and integrates design thinking, technology, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy in a hands-on experience.
“Intersession projects offer a unique learning experience, helping students develop the essential skills of critical thinking, creative problem solving, communication, and collaboration. It is a truly one-of-a-kind program,” Cliff Mason II, Middle School Principal.

8th graders shared original poems with their families and peers at the Poetry Slam held at the Mountain View Community Center at Rengstorff Park. Each piece was a response to a published poet, built from a feeling, a structure, or a single line that stuck with them. It was the product of a full trimester of work.
“Stepping in front of a microphone to share a piece of writing is vulnerable work, and I could not be prouder of how brave our 8th graders were at this year's Poetry Slam. At this event learners realize that their words go beyond impacting their grades and have the power to move people within an audience,” Mx. Grinewich-Yonashiro, 8th Grade ELA and History teacher.

Today we welcomed members of the Google Search and Google Classroom teams to observe in our middle school. They met with teachers and learners as a way to develop empathy and understanding about what middle school education looks like at a school like BCS. Next week they’ll visit a school in Brazil!

5th graders are bridging the grade-level divide with their Kindergarten buddies on two bridge-building projects.

5th graders are crafting cardboard bridges with 2 or more attachment techniques.
Kindergartners are problem solving for Ruby from the children’s book, The Little Blue Bridge, a retelling of The Three Billy Goats Gruff using design thinking to build a Lego bridge to help her cross the creek.

“The best structures don’t just span gaps, they make connections!"
Keri Muller, TK-5 Makerspace Teacher

FLG conferences are Thursday and Friday‼️
Thursday is a ½ day (early dismissal at 12:30).
No school on Friday.

FLG 🟰Focused Learning Goals
Learners set, pursue, and reflect on goals that drive their learning.

“These conferences are one of the things I value most about how we do things at BCS -- building the goals around the student, setting targets for both academic growth and personal growth that actually reflect who they are.”
BCS Executive Director, Maureen Israel

What’s happening in Makerspace at North❓
Learners in TK-5 are solving problems by trying, failing, and trying again -- essential to learning. Mr. Kosuda who joined BCS this year is teaching learners
1️⃣ how to use cardboard attachment techniques
2️⃣ how to use a variety of materials
3️⃣ reinforcing the design thinking process.
“I'm thrilled to be working at a school where creativity is encouraged, and students are excited to bring their ideas to life,” Lucas Kosuda, TK-5 Makerspace Teacher at North.
