“We come to pick up food because everything is so expensive,”

For seniors like Maria Estela, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry helps stretch limited incomes and ensures nutritious food stays on the table.

Living in a household with five retired older adults, Maria shared how the support they receive can help offset up to $100–$150 in grocery costs each month — helping cover other essentials like medications, utilities, and transportation.

As food and living costs continue to rise, programs like the Mobile Food Pantry remain a vital lifeline for older adults across LA County.

Food is more than nourishment. It’s care.

At the Los Angeles General Medical Center, patients and community members can access nutritious food through distributions hosted in partnership with the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and the CARES Auxiliary Program.

Hundreds of families rely on these twice-monthly distributions, with some arriving hours early, showing just how essential this support is. This work is part of a growing “food as medicine” approach, helping people manage chronic conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure through access to healthier foods.

For many students, balancing school, work and rising living costs can be overwhelming.

At a recent food distribution at Pasadena City College one student shared how food assistance helps support her household of five and makes it possible to stretch limited income further each month.
