Today we made HISTORY!!!
Just now, the California legislature passed the Tenant Protection Act of 2019 and is on its way to Governor Newsom's desk to be signed! expands protections to 7 million tenants, covering more renters than any single tenant protection bill in recent US history!
Today's vote is a testament to the resurgence of organizing by renters and housing justice organizations across California. AB 1482 is the first major statewide expansion of tenant protections resulting from this growth in tenant voice and power.
Major shout out to ALL of the people that fought so hard to push this bill into reality! First off to all the tenant leaders who did countless direct actions, took to the streets, signed petitions, called their legislators and brought the grassroots to Sacramento.
Major thank to Assemblymembers David Chiu, Rob Bonta, Richard Bloom, Assemblymember Tim Grayson, Buffy Wicks, and Speaker Anthony Rendon, as well as Senate President pro Temopore Toni G. Atkins, Senator Bob Hertzberg, and Governor Gavin Newsom. Their leadership has been invaluable and will ensure that millions of California renters enjoy greater housing stability.
This victory proves that California’s renters are a force to be reckoned with, and we aren’t even close to being done yet!

"The LAPD recently released a call for 5,000 volunteers to staff a vast network of neighborhood patrols composed of community residents. We at Stop LAPD Spying Coalition reject the notion of community policing in all its forms. Communities must refuse to participate in this program and demand an immediate end to this operation. Rather than promoting community safety, the volunteer policing program extends the LAPD’s surveillance capacities, and reorients community relations toward those most enthusiastic about collaborating with the police."

"Inside the bright-white walls of his office, in one of Los Angeles’s poorest neighborhoods, Hamid Khan is a calming presence. Khan, 62 years old, is the founding organizer of the Stop LAPD Spying Coalition, a police watchdog group headquartered in Skid Row. A tall, broad-chested man, with a pronounced forehead and grayish-black hair kept neatly trimmed, he is patient with the constant parade of people from the neighborhood who walk in asking for toiletries or seeking advice about dealing with prying officers."
