⚠️ Meaningful readiness development — October 7, 2026: A newly updated Congressional Research Service (CRS) assessment substantially increases the publicly documented aircraft attrition from the Iran conflict.
The October 5 CRS update lists 81 U.S. fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and drones as lost or damaged since February 28. That is nearly double the 42 aircraft identified in CRS’s May assessment. The new tally includes 45 MQ-9 Reaper drones, 12 F-15E Strike Eagles, seven KC-135 tankers, an F-35A and an E-3 Sentry, along with special-operations aircraft and helicopters. CRS cautions that some aircraft were only damaged and have returned to service, so this should not be read as 81 aircraft permanently destroyed.

The MQ-9 losses are the most consequential readiness indicator. Air Force leaders told Congress in May that the Reaper fleet had already fallen to about 135 aircraft, compared with a longstanding planning floor of 189, even while the service was still required to sustain 56 worldwide combat lines. The updated CRS tally confirms that the Iran campaign has inflicted unusually heavy attrition on one of America’s primary intelligence, surveillance and precision-strike platforms.
