The City of Los Angeles, along with most major metropolitan cities, continues to see a spike in Catalytic Converter thefts. The thieves target the precious metals that act as the catalyst for unburnt fuel.
Thieves can crawl under a car and make two cuts to the exhaust pipe, above and beneath the catalytic converter with a portable Sawzall tool. Often, they are in and out in under 2 minutes.
Northeast Area encourages businesses and residents to park in locked and secured garages when available.
Installation of “cable cages” or metal plates are encouraged to deter thieves. Owners may upgrade their existing alarms with modules that detect the vibrations and high pitched sounds from the cutting blades. This crime trend has been covered by the news media as well. See the below listed link for additional information as provided by KTLA news.
Catalytic converters: Which vehicles are most at-risk for theft? Catalytic converters, which help scrub pollutants from your engine’s exhaust, have become more and more attractive to thieves in recent years.
