The Sanitation District has informed my office it is proceeding with urgently needed drilling on Western Avenue in San Pedro.

One Southbound lane of Western will be closed just passed Weymouth Avenue Monday-Friday from 6am to 6pm for an estimated two months.

The work is related to the partial tunnel collapse that happened last July and ensuring that it is safe for construction to continue.

While there is no doubt this is going to be disruptive and cause significant traffic, this work is important and, unfortunately, unavoidable.

I’m sorry to hear about Dr. Mary Sieu’s passing. Mary dedicated decades of her life to ABC Unified and its students, teachers, and families. She broke barriers as the first woman to lead ABC Unified and was a tireless advocate for public education.

I got to work with her several times over the years and I know she truly cared about her schools and making sure every student had the chance to succeed. My heart goes out to her family, friends, and everyone at ABC Unified who had the privilege of working with her. She will be deeply missed.

Yesterday, we celebrated the County employees who have found new and better ways to serve our residents at the 39th Annual Productivity and Quality Awards.

From a new paramedic program enabling life-saving blood transfusions in the field, to new approaches to mental health care, we recognized projects that show what’s possible when our employees think outside the box to solve problems and improve lives.

Congratulations to all the winers and thank you to our County employees. As my dad always taught me, our employees are LA County’s greatest asset.

The Hug Act was written in part by the young men I visit every month at Los Padrinos juvenile hall. It gives them and every young person in juvenile detention the right to hug their moms and other loved ones who come to visit them.

Safety is our priority but we have to be able to bring a little humanity back into our juvenile facilities and let moms like Chevonda hug their kids.

Two years ago, young people at Los Padrinos sent a poster to our Board Meeting asking for the right to hug their moms.
That broke my heart.  Safety is our priority but there should be room for these young people to hug their moms.

I brought their request to Probation, but was met with resistance. So we went another route.  The young men in LP that I meet with monthly worked with Assemblymember Isaac Bryan to draft the Hug Act – making it a right for young people in juvenile detention in California to hug or hold hands with their visitors.

Today, we stood with some of those same young people and advocates outside the Board of Supervisors to celebrate the Hug Act becoming California law—and to ensure LA County is ready to put it into practice.
