Summer is arriving at the Farm!

This week we harvested our first slicing cucumbers and our first green beans of the season. Small harvests, but meaningful ones. Every first harvest is a reminder of what consistent care can produce.
Two brothers spent time tending their very first garden patch. They transplanted corn, prepared soil, watered, and took ownership of their space. Watching young gardeners build confidence through hands-on work never gets old.
We also did a little kale maintenance, removing older leaves to improve airflow around the plants. Healthy leaves were chopped and dropped back onto the soil, where they will help feed soil life, retain moisture, and return nutrients to the garden. Diseased leaves should never be used for chop-and-drop and should be removed from the garden.
And hiding behind the kale is a Kabocha squash that is almost ready for harvest.

We’ve come to understand that the farm is a space for the people and of the people. With this in mind, we just hosted Ivan’s aka ‘s , community event called People, Plants & Paint. Ivan organized this with the support of a grant he won through ‘s Commujity Wellness Micro grant. 💚. Urban agriculture is different than big ag monoculture in that it also serves to grow community and tend to human needs. Humans need common spaces where we can create, uplift ourselves, laugh and connect. Oftentimes this happens on someone’s private property or a public setting. Our farm exists as a different kind of space. A sort of loosely organized communal space where the people’s will can happen without endless bureaucratic hoops. The potluck, paintings and heart connections were in full vibrancy! Our mental health can be improved by seeking moments to let the lights and laughter shine in.

Earth day everyday at the farm! We usually protect what we love and what better way to love our earth than to tend to soils, compost, plants and pollinators. A very special shout out to .foundation for making it all possible.

It tool a village to finish installing all garden beds before these last rains. central kitchen already provides thousands of meals each day to unhoused and recently unhoused adults, children & seniors they serve. These new garden beds that line the front and the entire side of their central kitchen building will now provide nutritiously dense vegetables and herbs to to medically necessary meals.

It took dozens of groups of volunteers, dedicated employees, contractors and donors to unload and load 10 pallets of Organic OMRI soils, compost & worm castings amd 250 planks from . Moving and staining 250 planks 8’x12”x2”, assembling them, filling them and planting them was only possible with so many hands working together. This heavy physical effort felt like CrossFit 🏋️
Finishing this installation before these rains prevented the wood from absorbing the water and being way heavier. This push to finish before these California storms paid off by making the entire workload lighter and drenching with raindrops on the new seedling

All seedlings were gifted by . Financial donations from
