Los Angeles County Homicide Detectives are continuing their investigation into a Deputy-Involved-Shooting that occurred at 20th Street East and Palmdale Blvd on Friday, June 12, 2020 at approximately 9:19 PM.
Detectives have learned that the three suspects who were involved in this incident committed an armed carjacking in the City of South Gate earlier in the day. The vehicle that was stolen had tracking software. The tracking company contacted the California Highway Patrol who located the vehicle on the 14 Freeway North of the 5 Freeway. The California Highway Patrol Officers followed the vehicle into the Agua Dulce area and requested the assistance of the Palmdale Sheriff’s Station. A pursuit was initiated by the California Highway Patrol which continued along the 14 Freeway at high rates of speed. Upon exiting Palmdale Blvd the pursuit continued East bound until reaching 20th Street East. All three suspects exited their vehicle armed. One of the suspects armed with a shotgun immediately surrendered. The other two suspects, armed with Handguns engaged both Deputies and Highway Patrol Officers, firing multiple rounds at them. At that time an Officer involved Shooting occurred during which one of the suspects was struck several times. The suspect was taken to an area hospital and is being treated for his injuries. The third suspect surrendered without being injured.
No Deputies or California Highway Patrol Officers were injured.
A shotgun and two handguns were recovered at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing and there is no further information at this time.
Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process. Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted. Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. We are in the Sheriff’s Operations Center with all of our specialized Unit Commanders, closely monitoring & strategizing to keep LA County safe! Like many of you, We strongly condemn the murder of George Floyd, but burning down our communities does nothing to bring about police reform. We are also very concerned these riots will lead to many deaths because it is spreading the Corona Virus. Covid-19 is highly contagious virus we cannot control, but we can control our actions. Stay safe everyone!

Deep within the halls of the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant Afsoon Nafissi works diligently away on the 8th floor as the Access to Care Bureau, Operations Sergeant.
The continues to honor Women’s History Month by highlighting strong and courageous women and celebrating their accomplishments; Today we recognize LASD Sergeant Afsoon Nafissi.
Sergeant Nafissi graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, San Bernardino. She went on to pursue her Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University in Alabama. Currently, she is in the process of obtaining her Doctorate Degree in Business from Columbia Southern University.
“Ever since I was in high school, I desired to become a Law Enforcement Officer. Yet, time and time again the expectations of becoming a Doctor or Lawyer was instilled upon me by so many people in my extended family and community, says Sergeant Nafissi.”
Whenever Afsoon felt discouraged by the naysayers who repeatedly told her that women had no place in Law Enforcement; Afsoon found guidance and inspiration by her Mother and Father. Afsoon’s mother always encouraged her to stay strong, follow her dreams, and to not become discouraged by other people’s expectations.
To this day, Afsoon still regularly finds the wisdom her Mother dispenses as an integral part of her character development.
When asked about her thoughts on Women’s equality, Sergeant Nafissi says she works equally as hard as her male counterparts and is blessed to work for a Department like the LASD. “I find a lot of my professional inspiration comes from witnessing trailblazing Executive Leaders in the Sheriff’s Department like Assistant Sheriff Robin Limon and Captain Tania Plunkett from Access to Care Bureau.”
As we reflect upon Women’s History Month, Sergeant Nafissi wants to let young ladies with a desire to become Deputy Sheriff know, “Sometimes what is expected of us from others is not what we want to achieve. Always remember, do not give up, put your mind to it, and work on making it happen. You can become successful in anything you believe in.”
