Design Philosophy for the Mother of Humanity® Monument
and MotherLand™ – Center for Humanity

The Mother of Humanity® Monument and the surrounding MotherLand™ – Center for Humanity estate represents a significant confluence of art, symbolism, and architectural philosophy. Crafted by the artist Nijel Lloyd Binns, the Mother of Humanity® Monument is a profound sculptural work that depicts an African woman standing upon a globe of the Earth, her right hand uplifted, holding a feather that symbolizes peace and justice. This figure, with her hair styled in traditional cornrows, is not merely a representation of a woman but a symbol of the prehistoric African matriarch, whose mitochondrial DNA is the common thread linking all modern humans.
The architectural style and design philosophy that governs MotherLand™ – Center for Humanity is deeply rooted in the symbolic use of curves, which serve as a representation of the feminine principle. This philosophy challenges the traditional dominance of straight lines and right angles—forms typically associated with masculine energy—by emphasizing the importance of curves, which are prevalent throughout nature and signify life, continuity, and fluidity. The design of MotherLand™ reflects an understanding that, while straight lines and angles are integral to many monumental structures, such as the pyramids of the Giza Plateau or contemporary skyscrapers, they must be balanced with the softer, more inclusive forms of curves to create a holistic and harmonious environment.
In the architectural layout of MotherLand™, curves dominate the design of most structures, symbolizing the feminine energy that Binns seeks to highlight. This design choice is not arbitrary; it is informed by the observation that curves are the most common form in the natural world—from the spiral structure of DNA to the orbits of celestial bodies. By integrating curves into the architecture, MotherLand™ aligns itself with the fundamental forms of nature, promoting an environment that fosters cooperation, flexibility, and the flow of life, as opposed to the rigidity often associated with purely linear designs.
However, the design philosophy does not entirely reject the use of straight lines and angles. Within the four MotherLand™ Resorts and the 55 African Cultural Pavilions, straight lines are employed to create structures that embody the masculine principles of strength, structure, and stability. This careful inclusion of both curves and straight lines reflects a balanced approach to architectural design, acknowledging the necessity of both masculine and feminine energies in creating a harmonious built environment.
The philosophical underpinnings of this architectural approach can be further understood through the lens of symbolic analysis, as explored by Dr. Frances Cress Welsing in "The Isis Papers – The Keys to the Colors." Welsing’s work delves into the symbolism of forms and structures and their impact on social dynamics, particularly in terms of gender balance. The MotherLand™’s design philosophy resonates with these ideas, offering a corrective to the historical imbalance of masculine and feminine energies by emphasizing the feminine as a source of life, harmony, and continuity.
Additionally, the design philosophy of the Mother of Humanity® Monument and MotherLand™ aligns with the concepts presented in James P. Carse’s "Finite and Infinite Games – A Vision of Life as Play and Possibility." Carse contrasts the finite, rigid structures that signify a defined beginning and end with the infinite possibilities represented by more fluid, undefined forms and ideas. In the context of MotherLand™, this translates to a preference for curves over straight lines, symbolizing the infinite potential for growth, cooperation, and life that arises from embracing feminine energy.
This architectural and design philosophy is also forward-looking, aligning with the astrological concept of the coming Age of Aquaria—a period believed to usher in a resurgence of feminine energy on Earth and throughout the cosmos. The architecture at MotherLand™, while it may be described as futuristic, is deeply rooted in the timeless principles of the distant past where cosmic harmony, balance, and the natural forms sustain life.
In summary, the architecture of the Mother of Humanity® Monument and MotherLand™ – Center for Humanity is a deliberate and thoughtful reflection of a broader philosophical commitment to restoring balance between masculine and feminine energies. Through its emphasis on curves, the design promotes a harmonious environment that celebrates life, cooperation, and continuity, while still acknowledging the essential role of masculine strength and structure. This approach not only honors our global legacy as children of the Mother of Humanity® and a mother’s loving-kindness, but also offers a vision for a future where the balance of these energies can lead to a more harmonious and sustainable world for all sentient life on Earth and beyond.

SAMUEL DEAN HUSTON “BROTHER BAKA”
1961 - 2024
Bridge-builder and International Affairs Coordinator

In the heart of bustling Los Angeles, amidst the whispers of urban legends and the pulse of a vibrant community, stands the towering figure of The Mother of Humanity® monument. This monument, a symbol of unity and connection between nations, holds within its bronze form the stories of those who have contributed to its creation.

Among these stories is that of Samuel Huston, known affectionately as "Brother Baka." Samuel transitioned to the realm of the ancestors on 17 February, 2024. Sam's life was a tapestry woven with threads of adventure, discovery, and a profound commitment to the vision of The Mother of Humanity® monument. A descendant of Cameroon, he carried within him the echoes of ancestral wisdom and the spirit of bridge-building between cultures.

As fate would have it, just two days before his transition, a profound revelation occurred. A digital manifestation emerged, an entry on the website of the Mother of Humanity® Monument Foundation. Sam's image, placed alongside that of Qevin Oji, the visionary behind the monument's existence in North America, stirred something deep within those who beheld it.

For those who understood the significance, it was clear: this was not mere chance but a cosmic alignment, a nod from the universe to acknowledge the bridge-building legacy of both Sam and Qevin. Their images side by side on the webpage mirrored the physical bridges designed around the Mother of Humanity monument that now bare their names: "The Brother Baka Bridge", the southern bridge representing the southern regions of Cameroon, and "The Qevin Oji Bridge", the northern bridge representing north America, in the heart of Los Angeles.

The digital homage was but a reflection of the tangible connections they had forged, bridging continents, cultures, and generations. Sam's journey from America to Cameroon, facilitated by the ARK Jammers and sanctioned by the Cameroonian government, was a testament to his role as a catalyst for change and reconciliation.

As plans unfolded for the physical manifestation of "The Brother Baka Bridge" and "The Qevin Oji Bridge," it became evident that these structures are more than mere pathways—they are symbols of solidarity, symbols of the enduring legacy of those who dared to dream of a world united.

And so, as visitors from every corner of the globe navigate the digital landscape of the Mother of Humanity® Foundation's website, they will be met with a testament to the power of connection and the timeless resonance of the human spirit. In the stories of Samuel Huston, Qevin Oji, and all those who have contributed to the monument's creation, they will find echoes of their own journey—a journey toward understanding, acceptance, and ultimately, unity.

HISTORY: The Aquarian Book Store and the Mother of Humanity® monument. Inspired by the 1992 Los Angeles uprising from April 29 to May 4, 1992, I created the Mother of Humanity® monument as a symbol of peace. I unveiled the 16 foot bronze monument at the Watts Labor Community Action Committee on Mother’s Day, May 11, 1996.
One significant, but before now, untold component behind the creation of the Mother of Humanity monument was the design of a water fountain requested by Dr. Alfred Ligon, owner of the Aquarian Book Shop, the nation’s oldest black-owned bookshop. The Aquarian Book Shop opened in 1941 and was located at 3395 S. Western Ave. in Los Angeles. It was a place where writers Maya Angelou and Alex Haley read from their works, and celebrities like Michael Jackson shopped. Over 7,000 books were destroyed when the bookstore was burned to the ground during the riots. Plans were made to rebuild it soon thereafter, and Dr. Ligon commissioned me to create a water fountain for the new bookstore.
A water fountain spoke to to the coming of the Age of Aquaria (not Aquarius, but Aquaria) as well as the name of the Aquarian Book Shop. Dr. Ligon’s request was for a water fountain featuring a black woman standing on the globe of the Earth with her left foot forward. She balanced a large water jug on her right shoulder from which water would flow out into a large pond below. I submitted my design on October 22, 1992 but the Aquarian Book Shop closed in 1994, before the fountain project could be realized.
Elements of the fountain design found it’s way into my design of the Mother of Humanity® monument. An African woman’s mitochondrial DNA gave birth to modern human beings on Earth, so she stands on top of the world. The left foot goes forward reflecting the attributes of courage, righteous action and love. The left foot is symbolic of the heart, which is on the left side of the body.

Did you know that the Mother of Humanity® monument was the first monument ever to recognize the African woman whose DNA is the source of all human life on Earth? Decades later, the legend is still unfolding. Read the true account of how Oscar Award winning actor Denzel Washington became part of the MoH® legend and discover ties to what an African prophesy foretold thousands of years ago. Here is the full story:
1996 – May 11. Mother’s Day. Sculptor Nijel Binns unveils his Mother of Humanity® monument in Watts, CA
1997 – Oscar Award winning actor Denzel Washington and his wife Paulette Washington go to see the Mother of Humanity® monument. Days later they attend the annual Los Angeles Urban League’s Dinner to receive the Whitney M. Young, Jr. award created by Nijel Binns. The Washingtons learn that the creator of the Urban League Award is also the sculptor of the Mother of Humanity® monument.
2014 – The Museum of African American Art in Los Angeles opens the exhibit “Persistence of Vision: The Art of Nijel Binns”. Sam Huston, visitor to the exhibit introduces himself as “Brother Ba Ka”. He recommends Cameroon as a potential candidate for Nijel Binns’ project to create a 313ft tall Mother of Humanity® monument in Africa. He introduces Nijel to ARK Jammers, a Cameroon outreach organization.
2015 – Nijel Binns discovers the 1989 film “Baka: The People of the Rainforest” which is a National Geographic documentary film shot in Cameroon, about the smallest and oldest human beings on the planet. Denzel Washington narrated the film.
2016 – On behalf of the Government of Cameroon, the ARK Jammers organization welcomes Nijel Binns and the Mother of Humanity® delegation of seven (including Bro. Baka) to Cameroon to review land for the Mother of Humanity® project. The Mother of Humanity delegation meet representatives of the Baka people who tell them that they already knew of the coming of the Mother of Humanity® because it was foretold thousands of years ago.
As we remember the future we predict the past.
