Yesterday, we laid to rest Valerie “Ms. Val” Comrie. Ms. Val was, to say the least, a champion of the Recovery Courts of Robeson County.

Over a decade after she began the Family Treatment Court, our office asked Miss Val for her help and guidance in starting our DWI and Adult Drug Treatment Court programs in 2019. Ms. Val did not hesitate to help. She didn’t worry about what her role would be, how much work it would require in addition to her regular job, or even that she would be doing this on a volunteer basis with no promise of compensation. For Ms. Val, seeing the miracle of recovery happen was reward enough.

Ms. Val is an invaluable part of the Recovery Courts of Robeson County. Her passing leaves a vacancy that can never be filled, but was immediately felt.

We pray that her family finds comfort in knowing how Ms. Val’s compassion for recovery impacted everyone she met and we pray God gives us the strength and courage to continue her mission.

The North Carolina General Assembly approved the 2026-2027 state budget, which was signed into law by the Governor. This budget provides $1.1 million for the Robeson County District Attorney’s Office to hire 7 new Assistant District Attorneys. These 7 new ADAs will drastically improve our capabilities in Our Office.

The Robeson County District Attorney’s Office has been the least staffed and most under-resourced prosecutor’s office in the entire State for many years. A work study completed by the State over two years ago determined that Robeson County needed 14 more ADAs to keep up with the massive volume of cases pending in the County. The budget providing these new positions for Our Office moves us closer where we need to be to adequately handle our caseload.

We are grateful for our State representatives advocating for us, the General Assembly for recognizing our needs, and the Governor for supporting these efforts to address community concerns.

Today, Christian Clark was plead guilty of Second Degree Murder of Kinsey Scott, a 16 month old child. Clark was sentenced to a 250-312 month active sentence. We are grateful for the work of Assistant DA Elizabeth Gurnee who prosecuted the case and the Robeson County Sheriff's Office for their thorough investigation and support.

On April 6th, Chamberlain Oxendine was found guilty of 2nd Degree Murder of victim Tazarie Butler. Oxendine was sentenced to 200-252 months in prison.

We are thankful for the dedication of Assitant District Attorney Graham Gurnee who prosecuted the case and the hard work done by the Robeson County Sheriff's Office during the investigation of the incident.
