⚠️ FACT OR FICTION: Will writing on your ballot automatically disqualify it?

A viral post claims this warning came from “pollworker training.” That’s not what we teach our election officers in Lunenburg County, and the post does not accurately explain Virginia election law.

Virginia voters normally mark their own ballots. If a voter needs assistance marking a ballot, Virginia law provides a specific process for requesting that assistance. And a stray mark does not automatically invalidate an entire ballot—the law provides that a ballot should be counted when the voter’s intent is clear.

If something about your ballot ever concerns you, ask an election officer before casting it. And if an election claim you see online concerns you, contact the Office of Elections. We’d rather answer your question than have misinformation answer it for you.

What happens when you put your ballot into the scanner? 🗳️

The DS300 scans your ballot, alerts you on screen if something needs your attention, and confirms when your ballot has been successfully cast.

👀 Watch the screen before you walk away—you’ll see your confirmation and the public ballot count increase by one.

And yes: although we recommend inserting your ballot face down for privacy, the scanner reads both sides.

🗳️ LUNENBURG VOTERS: Can someone help you read or mark your ballot? YES.

Virginia voters who require assistance because of a physical disability or an inability to read or write may request assistance with voting.

Depending on the circumstances, you may choose someone to assist you—subject to certain restrictions—or ask an Officer of Election for help.

Before assisting inside the voting booth, the required assistance form is completed.

Most importantly:

➡️ YOU make the voting decisions.
➡️ Your assistant follows YOUR instructions.
➡️ Your assistant may NOT influence your choices.
➡️ Your ballot choices remain PRIVATE.

🗳️ LUNENBURG VOTERS: You’ve heard “provisional ballot”—here’s what it means.

A provisional ballot isn’t a different set of candidates or questions. It’s a voting process used when additional information must be reviewed before election officials can determine whether the ballot can be counted.

Virginia voters may cast provisional ballots for several reasons, including Same Day Registration and certain situations involving voter registration, identification, absentee-ballot status or other issues at check-in.

What happens afterward?

📝 You complete the required information.
🗳️ You vote your ballot.
✉️ Your ballot is sealed separately in a provisional envelope.
🔎 The necessary information is researched.
⚖️ The local Electoral Board reviews the provisional ballot and determines whether it can be counted.

A provisional ballot is not automatically rejected.

You’ll receive information explaining the process and the Electoral Board meeting where provisional ballots are considered.
