Victory laps over historic state savings, while public schools are closing and property tax payers are footing the bill, are wildly offensive. AB 1176, the bill I introduced with Rep. Christian Phelps earlier this year with the full support of the Assembly Democratic caucus would have been an important first step in addressing these issues — the state’s historic disinvestment in public schools and the cost shifting on to local property taxes. It’s time elected officials got serious about our constitutional obligation to fully fund PUBLIC schools.

“Why are voters being told they have to choose between adequately funding public schools and property tax relief?”
💡 We can and must do BOTH. 👏🏽

School funding has been framed as a choice between property taxpayers and students. Wisconsin can do better.

📣AB307 — proposed last session — would have put enrollment caps back on. To be clear, your property taxes are paying for TWO school systems: PUBLIC schools and UNACCOUNTABLE VOUCHER schools.

In the 25-27 biennium budget, you are paying
✔️$1,836,391,400 to UNACCOUNTABLE VOUCHERS and independent charters
✔️$0 in general aid to PUBLIC schools

Dr. Jill Underly, WI State Superintendent laid it out clearly: We have a constitutional duty to fund public education, and we're failing to meet it. Our funding formula, as she said, "places value on the wrong things" instead of what kids actually need. This has created, in her words, "haves" and "have nots" – deep inequality between districts mere miles apart. A child's opportunity to succeed shouldn't depend on their zip code. And one of the biggest reasons this formula remains broken is the voucher program.

It's time to stop funding a private system with no accountability while starving the public schools that answer to all of us. Public school students aren’t failing; the legislature is failing our children.

For years, we've been told public schools are the problem – they're unaccountable, they waste money. That narrative is false, and it's backwards. Public schools answer to elected school boards, open meetings laws, public budgets, and state academic standards. Every dollar is tracked and every decision is made in public.

Voucher schools answer to no one. They can reject students. They aren't required to meet the same academic standards, report the same data, or hold public meetings. Yet they take hundreds of millions of dollars a year straight out of our public school funding — money raised from local property taxpayers and spent with almost no accountability. If we're serious about accountability, we should start with the system that has none.

As a former public school teacher who watched this legislature strip collective bargaining rights from public workers in 2011, I know what happens when we let public institutions and the people who staff them get hollowed out. In the Assembly, I've worked to fund special education at the level the state promised, keep public dollars in public schools, and fix our inequitable funding formula so it's based on student need instead of zip code. Dr. Underly’s address is a call to action. I won't stop pushing until we end the voucher drain and build a funding formula that gives every Wisconsin kid a fair shot.

Last week — after having run into him the week prior at Laborfest — I had the privilege of presenting former Racine Alderman and State Representative Bob Turner with a legislative citation recognizing his tremendous record as a public servant. It was truly an honor to join the city council, Mayor Cory Mason, and the chiefs of the Racine police and fire departments to do so. Bob is one of a kind and I am thankful for his leadership.

When you hear comparisons between public schools and voucher schools, what costs are actually being counted—and which ones are ignored? 🤔

Claims about voucher schools being “more cost‑effective” often leave out the full picture. This week’s Setting the Record Straight post takes a closer look at the very different cost structures public schools are required to carry—and why comparisons without context miss the mark. Read claim #1 to get the facts. 👇
