On Wednesday, I had an extended tour of Anna McDonald ahead of our Committee of the Whole meeting, hosted by Principal Kirk.

While I’ve seen the school many times through the years, this more thorough tour gave me an even greater appreciation for how thoughtfully the building has been repurposed to educate our 2nd- and 3rd-grade students. And I have to admit that the colors reminded me of my favorite Crayola Bold Markers palette from the late 1990s!

As our building with the most character, it’s important that we continue to take a close look at the space, not only to preserve the memories and history this building carries, but also to consider how it can continue to serve the evolving needs of our students and staff.

There’s a lot of history within these walls, and I appreciate the opportunity to spend more time in the building and learn more about its current use and future possibilities.

September is Su***de Prevention and Awareness Month

This can be a heavy topic, especially when we’re talking about our kids.

It’s simple: check in, listen, and be there.

Our kids are all at different ages and stages. For some, it may be helping them name their feelings and knowing they have a trusted adult to talk to. Others, it could be giving them the space to talk, without judgment, even when they don’t have all the words.

Asking “How are you really doing?” and taking that time to listen to the answer.

I want us to continue creating environments where every child knows they are loved, they matter, and they have people in their corner.

Not only this month but all year long.

Consider placing some teal and purple ribbons on your trees and checking in with our kids (and beloved adults too).

Many thanks to former 114 parent Shelly Lewis for all her work towards making us aware. And for always asking me that question when I see her and listening to my response. 🩵💜

Some dates are forever etched into our hearts. September 11, 2001, is one of them.

Today, we remember the innocent lives that were taken far too soon, the families who were forever changed, and the brave first responders and heroes who ran toward danger while others were running away.

We remember the courage, compassion, and unity that brought our nation together during one of its darkest days. And we remember the countless sacrifices that followed.

As the years pass, may we never allow the memories to fade. May we continue to honor those we lost by choosing kindness, standing together, and cherishing the freedoms and people we hold dear.

25 years later, we still remember. We still honor. We still grieve. And we will never forget. 🕊️ 🇺🇸

Two weeks ago, I shared a few brief remarks with our staff as we welcomed the start of another school year. I spoke about how none of us can know what the year ahead will bring, but how fortunate we are to be part of a community where people show up for one another.

Yesterday, I was reminded of those words.

I ask our community to keep the family, friends, classmates, and teachers of Tony Reed Jr., a member of the Class of 2025, in your thoughts during this difficult time. Please take care of one another, offer support where you can, and remember the strength that comes from being part of a community that stands together.

Hope you’re having a great summer! My family and I are trying to make the most of it between the intense storms and hot days that remind me of my Texas childhood.
Meetings continue throughout the summer. The Committee of the Whole serves as a place for the board to ask questions, share ideas, and dig into topics that may eventually become action items at regular board meetings - which also continue through the summer.
The Lincoln-Way 843 Governing Board is active as well, especially with its annual budget needing approval sooner than Manhattan’s.
