Hi everyone,
* A potent wind surge will set in across Florida Keys coastal waters later tonight, with rough seas developing and persisting through at least Tuesday.
* Small Craft Advisories likely will be issued for all Keys coastal waters this evening.
* Breezes will slacken some by mid-week, but remain fresh.
A cold front is moving southward across the Gulf waters and northern Florida, powered by an expansive continental air mass. Light and variable breezes across Keys coastal waters late this afternoon will turn from the N and begin to freshen before sunset. After midnight, breezes will turn out of the NNE and freshen further, especially over the extreme southeastern Gulf waters where sustained winds near 25 knots and gusts up to 30 knots are likely. Meanwhile, seas will build to 6 to 9 feet over the southeastern Gulf waters.
Winds will likely lull somewhat during the day Sunday before surging from the NE Sunday evening and persisting into Monday. Winds in some areas will peak again near 25 knots with gusts near 30 knots. Seas in the Gulf Stream off the upper Keys likely will build to 8 to 10 feet, with steep waves due to the wind-current opposition.
If you live or work in a mooring field or anchorage (e.g., Key West Bight or Boot Key Harbor), please remember that winds of this magnitude can flip dinghies. Plan your transits to and from the mooring fields and anchorages accordingly, and always wear a life jacket—it is the most proven way to save a life.
Numerous rain showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop in the moist and unstable tropical air mass both tonight and Sunday. Winds and seas will be locally higher in and near these fast-moving showers and storms.
