To my constituents in District 3 : Please understand that this message may not be perfectly polished β I donβt normally use Facebook β but I want to speak directly and honestly. If my writing style offends anyone with advanced degrees, I apologize. My goal is simply to explain why I believe I am the right person to continue serving as your Perry County Commissioner.
I have had the honor of serving you for 24 years, and I am grateful for every opportunity you have given me. Over the years, Iβve experienced everything from being removed from my own qualified voters list while I was on the ballot, to hearing on a Sunday morning radio show that I βdidnβt careβ about my district β even as I was driving to Selma to pick up an air jackhammer to help the water department during a nine day outage near the 162 intersection around the Fourth of July.
After all these years, you would think nothing could surprise a seasoned elected official, but the last few years have been unlike any others. I consider this position a job β one where the people who elected me expect me to show up, be present, and cast my vote as one of five representatives for this county. You expect your tax dollars to be used responsibly for the future of Perry County. You expect county services β garbage, water, roads and bridges, ambulance, and E911 β to meet proper standards. And you are right to expect that.
The commission makes decisions every 2nd and 4th Tuesday, and especially during budget season. When leadership is respectful and organized, problems can be fixed. Unfortunately, we are not in that place right now. I have stood my ground and voted in the best interest of our county. I have repeatedly encouraged people to look at my voting record rather than judge me based on poor decisions made by the commission as a whole. I do not claim every vote I cast was perfect β I make decisions based on the information available. But when an administration refuses to produce an agenda until the day of the meeting, it affects the entire county.
These issues will be resolved. Iβve worked through tougher situations, and I donβt give up!!
My opponent is a good candidate from a good family. Iβve known them my whole life. She is asking for my job. On her platform, she mentions the Highway 219 water project β a CBDG grant that originally served about 70 families and later expanded to include the East Perry Fire Department and a portion of Highway 183. Bibb County supplied the water under a 50 year contract at a set rate. The long term plan was to connect Bibb, Chilton, and Dallas counties. The Highway 183 project is now moving toward Chilton County. The water board chose to end the contract with Bibb County WHY ? β for reasons, you would need to ask Earl Ford.
In August 2025, the Delta Regional Authority awarded the Perry County Water Board a $2 million grant for Heiberger infrastructure, with Goodwin Mills and Caywood as engineers. For over six months, I have asked why bids, drawings, and service draws have not been activated. The only answer I receive is that they are βin contact with the water board.β The funding is in place. I thank the commissioners who supported these projects. But grants have deadlines, and delays put the project at risk. I continue pushing the engineering firm to move forward so the Heiberger community can finally get relief from water outages.
The water board is self sustaining. The commission only appoints members and helps secure grants. We do not control their operations. I am the only commissioner who is actually on the water system.
I completed all available ACCA courses years ago β ALGTI 1 and 2 β becoming the second person in Perry County to do so, after Commissioner Tim Sanderson. I attend annual conventions for updates. Over the years, millions of dollars have been spent in District 3 through the engineerβs department for storm damage repairs, pipe placement, rock, and bridge replacements. We constantly seek funding. We have missed federal funding opportunities because the administration failed to produce audit information. I have not seen financial statements beyond the budget β which I voted against β and occasional mid year reports that do not match our expenditures for the past 24 months.
Projects completed in District 3 include:
β’ Hwy 29 bridge replacement
β’ Sam Colburn bridge replacement
β’ Tater Shed bridge replacement
β’ Medline Road bridge replacement
β’ Sardis Church Road paving
Scheduled for 2027:
β’ Hwy 29 resurfacing
β’ County Road 6 resurfacing
β’ County Road 30 resurfacing
Medline Road is scheduled for paving through the forestry service co op. Hwy 64 striping is planned.
Years ago, I implemented a daily activity report for the road department, based on ACCA training. I also helped draft the employee policy handbook. But ACCA does not teach you how to deal with fraudulent or disrespectful behavior. They teach you the law β what you can and cannot do. I will not allow crews to work outside county right of way. Times have changed since the Jack Green and Bud Rinehart era. Not all commissioners follow the rules β that is obvious.
I have opposed several projects:
β’ The hotel β we still owe over $1 million on something that should never have happened.
β’ The old Armory reconstruction β while we appreciate the $500,000 from Rep. Terri Sewell, it could have been used more effectively.
β’ Spending $2 million on a county shop β we already have a renovated annex that can serve the purpose.
β’ Three tax increases β all defeated by voters.
β’ Unnecessary lawsuits caused by arrogance.
β’ Misuse of federal funds that cost us the summer food program years ago. Children suffered because adults abused the system.
Accomplishments :
β’ I was part of the team that passed a local law allowing us to vote at the new National Guard Armory β proof that I can work across party lines.
β’ I have supported projects in Uniontown and Marion. I serve on the E911 board, where teamwork has put us in the best shape ever. I served on the RCD board from 2016β2024, issuing grants to organizations across the county and providing two UTVs and a drone to the sheriffβs department.
β’ I have supported MMI and the charter school with grants and fought to keep MMI in Perry County.
β’ I serve on the Perry Lakes Board, which recently received support from the Cahaba Blueway.
β’ I have served on the Blackbelt Action Committee.
β’ I chair the Perry County Republican Party.
β’ I secured $550,000 in discretionary funds from Senator Katie Britt for 2027 to support emergency services and law enforcement.
β’ I helped bring an ambulance service to the county and continue working with the hospital board to keep it stable.
On a personal note: I am a father of three, a grandfather of ten, and blessed with a supportive wife of 30 years who recently retired from Marion Community Bank. I have the best Mother, brothers, and their wonderful families, as well as Aunts and Uncles, neighbors, and friends. Iβve lived my entire adult life on my grandparentsβ home place. My wife and I formerly owned Harrison Automotive Inc. I am fortunate to have a career that allows me to work from home in Sprott. I attend Ephesus Baptist Church. I have proudly served as your commissioner since 2002.
I am not a spotlight seeker. Iβm not a fan of Facebook drama. I still believe in a good conversation over a beverage or a phone call. Social media can be a powerful tool β and lately, it has been. I have always responded to your calls and messages, whether about garbage delays or water issues. I work for you every day.
I have built strong relationships with neighboring county officials and with Republican leaders at every level of government. That comes from experience.
The most important thing District 3 can do for me is this: On May 19, ask for a Republican ballot and vote for Brett Harrison.
As I said earlier, my opponent is qualified. But I have met every challenge head on for over two decades. I will continue working with fellow commissioners who act prudently, productively, and ethically. Perry County deserves no less. I have always voted independently, based on what I believe is best for our county. I stand by my record and accept responsibility for my mistakes β that also comes with experience.
Perry County is at a pivotal moment. I would appreciate the opportunity to continue serving as your voice. Being an elected official is not easy. Sometimes we are grouped with decisions outside our control. I ask that you educate yourself on what commissioners can and cannot control, and look at the voting record β it speaks for itself. Any action requires a majority vote, and even if a commissioner votes against it, they are still financially responsible for one fifth of the outcome.
I ask for your continued support, and I will respect the results of this election. When November comes, I will still be supporting my Republican Party, and as your commissioner, I will remain dedicated to this position.
I am asking you to VOTE REPUBLICAN. Vote for BRETT HARRISON, District 3 Commission Perry County Republican. Thank you !
