🔥🚒 Firefighters may look different in their gear—but they’re still there to help! 🚒🔥

McConnell Fire Emergency Services B-Shift spent the morning with students at Wineteer Elementary as Fire Prevention Week continued across Team McConnell.

Students learned important fire safety lessons, including watching a demonstration of stop, drop and roll, spending some time with Sparky, and getting an up-close look at one of our fire trucks and the equipment our crews use.

One of the most important lessons—especially for our youngest students—was learning what a firefighter may look and sound like during an emergency. Students watched as one of our firefighters put on full protective gear and breathing equipment before getting the chance to interact, give high-fives, and see that underneath all that equipment is still a firefighter who is there to help.

Helping children become comfortable around firefighters in their gear can make a difference during an emergency. If there’s a fire, we want them to recognize us, come to us, and never hide from a firefighter.

Thank you to the students and staff at Wineteer Elementary for spending part of Fire Prevention Week with us. We had a great time learning, laughing, and talking fire safety! 🐶🔥🚒

🔥🚒🦁 Fire Prevention Week goes hands-on at the Sedgwick County Zoo! 🦁🚒🔥

McConnell Fire Emergency Services joined area fire departments and emergency response teams for the Sedgwick County Zoo’s annual 5th Grade Fire Prevention Day, helping bring fire and life-safety education to more than 2,800 students, parents and teachers.

Inside the MFES Fire Safety House, students worked through kitchen, living room and bedroom scenarios while learning how to recognize fire hazards and what to do if a fire happens at home.

Then they put those lessons into action. With simulated smoke filling the bedroom, students practiced staying low and safely escaping through a window—giving them the opportunity to practice skills they may need during a real emergency.

Students also got hands-on experience with fire extinguishers while exploring equipment and capabilities from emergency response organizations throughout the area.

🔥 Fire safety isn’t just something we teach—it’s something we practice. 🔥

Thank you to the Sedgwick County Zoo, our fellow first responders, educators and everyone who helped make fire safety part of an awesome day for thousands of local students! 🦁🚒

🚒🔥 Fire Prevention Week fun at the CDC! 🔥🚒

McConnell Fire Emergency Services A-Shift and Sparky stopped by the Child Development Center today to spend some time with our youngest members of Team McConnell!

The kids had the opportunity to climb aboard the fire truck, get an up-close look at some of the equipment our firefighters use, and learn a little about the fire service. Of course, Sparky was a big hit, and there was plenty of excitement when he arrived! 🐶🔥

Visits like this are a great way to make fire prevention fun while helping children become more comfortable with firefighters and the equipment they may see during an emergency.

We had a great time with everyone at the CDC and loved seeing all the smiles and excitement!

It is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that the McConnell Fire and Emergency Services announce the passing of Assistant Chief Brent Hardsaw, who answered his final call on 29 May 2026. Brent served the McConnell AFB community with unwavering dedication, service and
honor as an active-duty Senior Master Sergeant as Deputy Fire Chief from 2014 to 2016 and then was hired as a civilian fire inspector in 2017 providing exceptional life safety services to the community. In December of 2021 he was promoted to Assistant Chief for Operations and assigned to B-Shift. Brent was a beloved husband, father, friend and an irreplaceable part of our fire department. Our thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences go out to Brent’s family, friends, and our entire firefighting brother- and sisterhood during this incredibly difficult time. Rest easy, brother. We have the watch from here.
