San Fran fixed its downtown - Spokane can too
Spokane's downtown has problems with drugs, crime and homelessness, that is for sure. As bad as things are here though, the poster child for mismanaging a downtown has been San Francisco. Or at least it used to be.
San Francisco's homelessness epidemic was so bad, with public defecation so prevalent, residents started mapping it with the "Snapcrap" app created to report it. In January 2025 though, Daniel Lurie took over as mayor, and things changed. 18 months later, San Francisco is a changed city.
Last Tuesday, Gavin Cooley shared a video at the Spokane Business Association's (SBA) annual dinner highlighting the dramatic change. It is linked below and is well worth the watch. Gone are the encampments, the open air drug use and the fentanyl zombies. In fact, things have changed so much the SF P**p Map has been retired.
The change isn't because San Francisco pushed the problem elsewhere, like Seattle for the World Cup, nor did it require mass incarceration. San Francisco simply recognized "meeting people where they're at" - allowing them to continue to use drugs and live on the streets - was neither compassionate nor effective policy.
San Francisco's approach is a roadmap to fix Spokane's downtown. Voters demanded it when they resoundingly passed the anti-camping ordinance in November 2023, which the state supreme court then struck down*. Rules approved by the city council, while a shadow of the ballot measure, at least provides tools for Mayor Brown to act, yet she doesn't.
In any case, enjoy the video, and imagine what Spokane's downtown could be like if we too restored accountabilty.

*When your ballots arrive 3 weeks from now, remember how the current Washington State Supreme Court repeatedly chooses to invalidate the will of the people and vote for David Stevens for Washington State Supreme Court Judge Dave Larson for Supreme Court Justice Vote Scott Edwards for Washington Supreme Court Todd A Bloom for Supreme Court Justice Position No 7.
If you want to ask Mayor Brown why she won't act to address homelessness in our downtown, here is link for contacting her.

Thanks again to Gavin Cooley and the SBA for their efforts to make Spokane a better place. They are a great organization and I am grateful for the work they do.
