08/05/2022

Well Election Day has come and gone. We worked hard but we were unsuccessful . Congratulations to Judge Karen Massey on winning her third term in Division 11. Thanks to everyone who supported and voted for me. I learned a lot about myself and others. I’ll keep working to make our community a better, safer place. Please support Judge Massey and all the other judges, prosecutors, lawyers and law enforcement officers who strive to make our system work on a daily basis. Thanks very much.

As Election Day on August 4, 2022 approaches I just have a few thoughts, observations and recommendations. As you contemplate who to vote for, I again encourage you to do your own research on each candidate in every race. Remember, if a candidate doesn’t tell you about their jury trial and appellate experience, they probably don’t have any.

Additionally, the endorsements and ballots that are being handed out at the polling places. Some of these sample ballots candidates have paid to be on. Be very careful. Additionally, I have learned that endorsements by the parties is equally flawed. It might surprise you that these endorsement decisions are often made without the endorsement committees even speaking to the candidates. The decision is made by a very small group of people.

In other words, qualification (legal and life experience) takes a back seat to politics. Now that’s the way of the world, but I was a little naive. I thought judicial elections might have had a higher standard, but of course they don’t.

I have met great people out in the community and learned a few things about people I have known for years.

Remember, for the next eight years you will have to endure the judges and other candidates you elect. Hopefully, it won’t effect you in a negative manner.

Finally, there is a lot of violent crime in Memphis. No pie in the sky academic progressive approach is going to solve it. The system we have may not be perfect, but it is better than any other system anywhere in the world. For the system to work we need competent lawyers, both prosecutors and defense lawyers, and judges who are experienced, fair and firm when needed. Now is not the time to elect novices in any of those areas.

So please do your research, get out and vote. One more day. Let’s keep pushing. .
