MDOT has secured a $44 million federal grant to improve roadways and traffic systems in DeSoto County. MDOT worked with Senator Roger Wicker, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith and DeSoto County officials to obtain the competitive grant through the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects (INFRA) program.

The funding will help provide much needed expansion of the I-55/I-69 corridor, which runs from Church Rd. to State Route 302. I-55 will be expanded from four to ten lanes. The project will include improvements to the interchanges at Church Rd. and SR 302 that include widening and extending the ramps along with adding a loop ramp in the southeast quadrant of the Church Rd. interchange.

DeSoto County Approves 23rd Consecutive Budget Without a Tax Rate Increase.

The DeSoto County Board of Supervisors has approved a millage rate of 34.25 mills for Fiscal Year 2027, keeping the County tax rate at the same level as the current fiscal year. Residents will not see an increase in the County property tax rate unless their assessed value has changed.

DeSoto County has not increased its millage rate since 2004. The rate remained at 41.02 mills for more than 20 years before the Board voted unanimously in August 2025 to lower it by 6.77 mills to 34.25.

The new budget includes several additions to public safety and emergency services, including an additional ambulance for the Love area, modifications to two County fire stations, and funding for the first paid county firefighters.

Funding is also included to make sure the Sheriff’s Office, District Attorney’s Office and County Courts have the resources needed to handle the demands of a growing county.

The County millage rate applies to real and personal property, vehicle tags and mobile homes.

Fiscal Year 2027 begins October 1, 2026.
