Hello everyone

We all have read , “things that are not here anymore “ in Memphis .
Well I have a list also and it is in a 3 block area in the heart of downtown.

Let start with the 100 No. Main Bldg. Been non existent for over 35 years . Let’s travel 2 blocks East ( Tenoke blvd )
That 5 story building was the recruiting station -Unites States Navy . Let’s continue one block East and travel to the Dermon Building . This 11 story building which has also been named “Jefferson Court building “ housed all sorts of businesses that included the Legal Aid .
When a fire broke out that heavily damaged floors 4th through 6th , it remained unfinished. Gradually , the tenants left one by one and we all know the result . Still to this day it also is dormant (34 years).
Ah ! Let us not forget the historic “Sterick Blvd.” This marvel of a late 20’s gothic masterpiece lays amidst at the corner of Third St. and Madison Ave .

Last but not least , The Exchange Bldg . Adjacent to the beautiful Squirrel Park or the correct name “Court Square “

To conclude dad’s small business that was in the middle of all these high -rises.
Thank you to all the city officials that chased so many to move away . You really can’t blame one individual but; I know the culprits and do do you !

Dad opened that tiny business in ‘46 . I shut it down in ‘94 .
THANKS AGAIN TO THE LEADERS THAT ONCE LED THIS GREAT SOUTHERN TOWN - ONLY TO GRADUALLY BURY THAT PART OF TOWN AND ASSURE OF NEVER TO BE RESTORED!!!!!!!!!

Did any of the weather people advise homeowners to keep of stream of water continuously coming from faucets .
I know I heard about snow , severe cold and such . I don’t I heard about the most important thing you should do .
Three people on my street . Close proximity of my home ….

DOWN MEMORY LANE ………

I remember along with my twin brother going to Whitehaven during the Christmas Holidays

Each neighborhood displayed their own Christmas theme . My aunt / uncle lived on the corner of Mickey and Dolan ; their theme in that neighborhood was named “Candy Lane “

What a pleasant area to visit and enjoy each others company during the most blessed time of the year . Aunt Alma Sangliatoni ( dad’s sister) prepared the most delicious Italian meal (s) .

This era was early sixties through mid seventies and crime ………… what crime !!!

Such a shame that a suburb of Memphis eventually would fall victim to blight and subsequently decay . Whitehaven will never come back as it was initially; crime has taken hold and will never let go !
