Misty Copeland broke barriers in the world of ballet when she became the first Black woman promoted to principal dancer at the prestigious American Ballet Theatre in 2015. Her promotion marked a historic moment for representation in classical ballet.
Copeland’s path to success was far from traditional. She didn’t begin ballet until age 13, which is considered very late in the professional ballet world. Despite this, her extraordinary talent and dedication quickly set her apart.
✨ Fun facts:
• She was once named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.
• She has written several books, including the memoir Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina.
• She often works with programs that introduce young dancers of color to ballet.
Through her artistry and advocacy, Copeland has helped expand who is represented on the ballet stage and inspired a new generation of dancers. 🩰
