Public Education was honored to be invited to assist with Kits 4 Kids trauma kit packing event with Miami-Dade Sheriffs Office, Miami Gardens Police and Miramar Police. Child friendly trauma kits were prepared for first responders to hand out to children at trauma calls in order to help alleviate stress. Trauma kits were donated by Walmart.

Community Affairs visited the Foster Grandparents Program at the Joseph Caleb Center and spoke about fire and fall safety for older adults. Thank you to Community Action Agency for the invitation.

Today Community Affairs had the honor of hosting seniors from Miami Central Senior High School for “A Day in the Life of a Firefighter” where students attended presentations at MDFR Headquarters.

Community Affairs was honored to take part in this years MDFR and Local 1403 Shop Drop and Roll with a firefighter toy drive at Walmart.

Today, the Community Affair team provided a truck demonstration for the students of Frank C. Martin K-8. The team provided the children with an opportunity to explore some of the equipment firefighters use and taught them some fire safety basics.

Over the weekend Public Education participated in MDPD Celebrating Safe Communities event.

Smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half. Protect what matters most. If the smoke alarm sounds:

*Get outside and stay outside.
*Go to your outside meeting place
*Call the fire department from a cellphone or a neighbors phone.
*Stay outside until the fire department says it's safe to go back inside.

Age matters when it comes to smoke alarms. They need to be replaced10 years from the manufacture date.

Is your smoke alarm still working?
A smoke alarm with a dead or missing battery is the same as having no smoke alarm at all. A smoke alarm only works when it is properly installed and regularly tested. Take care of your smoke alarms according to the manufacturer's instructions. Below are some general maintenance tips.

Smoke alarm powered by a 9-volt battery:
Test the alarm monthly.
Replace the batteries at least once every year.
Replace the entire smoke alarm every 10 years.

Smoke alarm powered by a 10-year lithium-ion (or “long-life”) battery:
Test the alarm monthly.
Replace the entire smoke alarm according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Smoke alarm that is hardwired into your home's electrical system:
Test the alarm monthly.
Replace the backup battery at least once every year.
Replace the entire smoke alarm every 10 years.
