Hands-on learning can dispel myths- look at this sweet guy! 😍 Spiders often get a bad rep, but are super cool creatures.

Here are a few facts you might not have known about our other "fury friends," the tarantula.
1) They are fragile💔 - despite their large, fierce appearance, a short fall can easily cause their abdomen to rupture and result in fatal injuries.
2) They turn food into "milkshakes" 🥤- tarantulas can't chew and swallow food. They inject paralyzing venom into their prey, vomit digestive juices onto the victim to liquefy its tissues, and use a specialized sucking stomach to drink up the liquefied remains.
3) They grow new legs 🕷️- Tarantulas grow and fully regenerate lost limbs through a process called molting.

🕷🕸 They may not be everyone's favorite critter, but spiders are a critical part of the world’s ecosystem and are quite beneficial to us. Some spiders can help prevent the spread of disease, eat pesky insects like mosquitoes, and the venom of some spider species can contribute to modern medicine!

We hope that the next time you encounter a spider, you consider scooping it up and putting it somewhere it can catch bugs! Let's appreciate these misunderstood animals and find a way to coexist better.

Don't be afraid of learning something new!

🐒 ZOO FUN FACT OF THE DAY! 🐒
Did you know the spider monkey has a prehensile tail that can support its full weight, essentially acting as a fifth limb? 🖐️

If you've visited our spider monkey exhibit, you’ve probably seen our resident brothers, Max and Rafiki! These two share an incredibly tight, special bond.
Unlike many other primates, male spider monkeys form exceptionally strong, cooperative alliances. In the wild, females leave their birth groups when they mature, while the males stay behind. This means the guys in a troop are usually brothers, half-brothers, or cousins who have grown up together, leading to lifelong friendships!

Here is how Max and Rafiki (and wild spider monkeys) keep their "bromance" alive:
🫂 The Ultimate Hugs: When bonded males reunite after being apart, they wrap their arms—and their prehensile tails—around each other in a deep embrace to show trust and reassurance.
🧼 Bro-Grooming: To ease tension, they spend hours grooming each other's fur.
🤝 Brothers for Life: They live in a "fission-fusion" society, meaning their big group constantly splits up and merges back together. Having a reliable partner is essential for patrolling territory boundaries and keeping the peace. 🤍

Who is OTTERLY loves Fall weather? 🍂

Willow and Mac the River Otters love the cooler temps! Since they are naturally acclimated to our climate, keepers don't need to do much to keep them comfortable in any season, but as the days get cooler, they are like many animals that are more active during these months.

We hope that you plan a brisk stroll through the WPZoo soon. This year we are even planning to extend our season by being open on Saturdays and Sundays throughout November. 🍂

If you’re planning a visit (or even if you can’t make it), consider donating to help us keep these critters happy, healthy, and well-fed. Every bit counts!
