Alderman Lamont Westmoreland The official Facebook account for City of Milwaukee Alderman Lamont Westmoreland, proudly representing Milwaukee's 5th Aldermanic District.

Alderman Lamont Westmoreland is a lifelong resident of the City of Milwaukee who, after starting his own business and working in small business lending, was elected to the Milwaukee Common Council on April 4, 2023, in his first bid for public office. Prior to public service, Lamont spent several years combatting food insecurity in Milwaukee with Hunger Task Force, educating Milwaukee residents on the various state assistance programs they might qualify for. Lamont also worked for one of the Nation’s top SBA Lenders, Byline Bank, helping small business owners in Milwaukee and the nation secure the funding needed to make their professional aspirations a reality. A small business owner himself, Lamont is the founder of an interior and exterior professional coating business that he has owned and operated throughout the greater Milwaukee area since 2020. Lamont graduated from Wauwatosa East High School before studying Business Management at ITT Technical Institute in Greenfield. In addition to the passion he has for Milwaukee and his district, Lamont is a proud father of two children, Julian and Farrah, husband to wife Samantha, and a devoted fan of the Milwaukee Bucks. With his vision, passion, and heart for people, Lamont felt called to public service and remains dedicated to his community both within and beyond his capacity as Alderman of the 5th District.

Congratulations to our 2026 Beautification Award Winners!

After receiving 68 nominations throughout the 5th Aldermanic District, the results are in!

1st Place — April Toy
2nd Place — Renee Lee
3rd Place — Alisa Streets

A special shoutout as well to Phillip & Rebecca Schuster and Nikki Bruneau, who were among this year’s five finalists. All five properties were deserving of recognition, and I appreciate everyone who took the time to nominate a property in the district.

We received 68 nominations this year. Not bad… but I think we can do better. Let's hit 136 next year!

A big thank you to all committee members who gave their time to help with this year’s awards. I appreciate all of you.

And a special thank you to Sentry Foods on 92nd and Bunzel's Meats and Catering for sponsoring the D5 Beautification Awards with me and helping make this program possible.

Now I’m putting the 5th District on notice: start getting those yards, gardens, landscaping and curb appeal ready for next year. If your neighbor’s property makes you slow down and take a second look, nominate them. If you think your own property deserves some recognition, nominate yourself - I won’t tell anybody.

Let’s see if we can double the nominations next year and recognize even more residents who take pride in their homes and our community.

Congratulations again to all of our winners, finalists and nominees!

Lisbon Avenue Update: The Speed Limit Has Changed

As the Lisbon Avenue reconstruction project nears its end, there’s another change drivers need to know about: the posted speed limit on Lisbon Avenue has officially dropped from 35 MPH to 25 MPH.

Please also note that there’s a school zone along the stretch where the speed limit drops even further to 20 MPH.

I’ve heard plenty of opinions about the new Lisbon design. Lots of residents and people who regularly travel the corridor love it. Lots aren’t exactly fans. Lots don’t really care either way.

Two things, however, are pretty hard to argue: Potholes on Lisbon Ave that small babies could get lost in are a thing of the past. And yes, traffic has definitely slowed down - as it has no choice. That was the point. The redesigned roadway was intended to slow traffic, improve safety and make the corridor more pedestrian-friendly.

Now that the speed limit has officially been reduced to 25 MPH, please pay attention to the signs and adjust accordingly. The road has changed. The speed limit has changed.

For information on this project, please visit the link in the comments.

Drive safe.

Thank you to everyone who came out to last night’s 5th District Town Hall meeting!

A special thank you to Milwaukee Harley-Davidson for hosting us. It’s the only Harley-Davidson dealership within the City of Milwaukee, in the city where Harley-Davidson was founded 123 years ago. I’m proud to have this dealership in the 5th Aldermanic District, and we appreciate them opening their doors to the D5 community. They are under new ownership, are rebranding and have made significant changes with more to come.

We were joined by the Department of Public Works Director of Operations, Transportation Infrastructure Engineer, Electrical Services, Department of Neighborhood Services, and the Milwaukee Police Department.

THANK YOU to everyone who came with questions, concerns and frustrations. Those conversations are part of what fuels me and help me fight and push for better.

More than 40,000 people call the 5th District home. In a city of roughly 565,000 residents, I am only one person. While I know about more than the average, I rely heavily on communication from constituents because what you see, experience and deal with isn’t always something I will know about unless you make me aware.

Last night was a very productive evening, and I appreciate everyone who took the time to show up and engage.

I’m always hoping for more residents to participate, so bring a D5 resident friend to the next Town Hall. Our October meeting will be held on the opposite, far southern end of the district.

Details are in the newsletter you recently received. If you didn’t receive one, please reach out to my office at 414-286-3870 or via email.

Looking forward to seeing you next month!

🎨 Make Art MKE Returns to Mount Mary This Sunday!

One of the things I enjoy most about living in and representing District 5 is seeing the different events that bring our community together. Make Art MKE is one of those events, and it’s back this Sunday at Mount Mary University.

Make Art MKE will take place this Sunday, September 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and I encourage you to come out and spend part of your day enjoying everything the event has to offer.

More than 175 artists and makers will be on hand, with everything from fine art and handcrafted items to unique products you won’t find just anywhere. There will also be food options available, so you can grab something to eat, walk around, shop, meet the artists and take in the atmosphere.

I think events like this are what make a community special. They give us a chance to get out of the house, support talented local artists and makers, and enjoy something right here in our own neighborhood. And with more than 50 years of history, Make Art MKE has become a Milwaukee tradition that I’m glad continues to bring people together.

I hope you’ll come out Sunday. Bring the family, bring a friend, grab some food and take your time walking around. There’s plenty to see, and you might just find something you didn’t know you were looking for.

When: Sunday, September 13, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Where: Mount Mary University, 2900 Menomonee River Pkwy.

One of my favorite food spots in District 5 is leaving — and honestly, it hurts.

Mara's Grill Mexican Restaurant has been my family’s go-to restaurant since the day they opened their doors nearly 11 years ago. Not just my family, but many others as well across the city. But they are so much more than a great place to eat. David and Mara have been staples in the neighborhood, and what makes that even more special is that they don’t just own a business here - they live here, too.

Unfortunately, the building where Mara’s is located was recently sold, and their monthly rent nearly doubled. As a small, family-owned business, that simply isn’t sustainable.

Their last day at this location will be September 19th.

David and Mara are incredible humans, neighbors and small business owners. They have poured over a decade into this community, and while they hope to find another location in the area, finding the right space - at a price that makes sense - is easier said than done.

I will do everything I can to help find Mara’s a new home right here in District 5, as they told me this is where they hope to remain.

After they close this location, David and Mara plan to take a well-deserved break. So before September 19th, I have one request:
Let’s send Mara’s out with a BOOM.

If you’ve been meaning to try them, go. If you haven’t been there in a while, go back. If Mara’s is already one of your favorites, go a few more times.

Lunch. Dinner. Takeout. Eat inside or outside. Whatever works for you.

Let’s show David and Mara just how much we appreciate them and everything they’ve given to our community over the past 11 years.

And who knows - hopefully this isn’t goodbye. Hopefully, it’s just see you at their new home in District 5.

Help a Milwaukee child become a stronger reader.

Forward Scholars Volunteer Tutoring: A Common Ground Initiative is looking for volunteer tutors to work with K–3rd grade students in Milwaukee schools who are not yet reading at grade level.

And the results speak for themselves.

Students who participated in the program gained an average of two grade levels in reading accuracy and fluency after just eight months of tutoring.

That’s not just tutoring. That’s helping a child build confidence, improve their education and open doors for their future.

Forward Scholars began in 2022 serving students at five Milwaukee schools. The program has continued to grow and is now looking for more volunteers as they expand their reach.

If you have the time and want to make a meaningful difference in the life of a Milwaukee child, consider becoming a Forward Scholars tutor.

You can sign up here:

Sometimes, making a difference starts with something as simple as helping a child read.

Looks like the Big Bad Wolf came through Milwaukee tonight!

He huffed, he puffed, and he blew quite a few trees down.

Tonight’s storm has left downed and damaged trees throughout the city. If you come across a tree or large branch that has fallen or been damaged, please report it so DPW crews can assess and address it.

Call 414-286-CITY (2489), or report it online by entering the location here:

https://city.milwaukee.gov/dpwservices/Services

Please stay safe and use caution around downed trees and branches, particularly if power lines are involved.

《Disclaimer:》

“The car” wasn’t actually crushed by a tree.

This image was created to grab people’s attention, remind residents to report downed or damaged trees, and make sure they know how to report them to the City.

And yes, I purposely used that car.

For those who remember, I was pretty vocal about that taxpayer-funded car when it was rolled out as a way to bring attention to reckless driving. I thought it was an embarrassingly wasteful use of tax dollars.

So when I needed a vehcile for this photo, there really was only one choice. It felt like a perfect opportunity.

The tree damage is real. The car damage… not so much.

The 2026 5th District Beautification Award (Sponsored by Alderman Lamont Westmoreland, Bunzel's Meats and Catering, & Sentry Foods on 92nd) Finalists Have Been Chosen!

After a full week of judging more than 60 beautiful properties throughout Milwaukee’s 5th Aldermanic District, our finalists have officially been selected!

You all definitely made it tough on us. In only our second year of the Beautification Awards, the pride residents take in their homes and properties made the competition even more difficult as participation has grown tremendously.

Finalists received their official yard signs this evening. So, if you see one of these signs around the neighborhood - or if one of these yards looks familiar - you might just be looking at one of this year’s finalists!

Now the big question: Who will take home this year’s top honors?

Finalist judging will take place during the week of August 24th, when we will select 1st Place, Runner-Up & 3rd Place.

Cash prizes, special recognition and other honors are on the line.

To everyone who was nominated this year, thank you for taking such pride in your property and helping make the 5th District a beautiful place to live, work and raise a family.

And if you weren’t nominated or didn’t participate this year, start planning for next year. We want to see even more residents participate in the 2027 Beautification Awards. There are so many beautiful properties throughout the 5th District, and we know there are plenty more that deserve to be recognized.

Stay tuned. The final judging is coming soon, and we’ll soon find out who takes home this year’s top honors!
