📢📚 The Alabama Public Charter School Commission (APCSC) is continuing its application cycle for prospective public charter schools planning to open in 2028 or 2029!

As we move forward in the application process, APCSC encourages prospective applicants to review the important dates and milestones outlined in our application cycle timeline.

🚨 IMPORTANT REMINDER: The preferred deadline to submit a Letter of Intent is Monday, November 2, 2026!

Submitting a Letter of Intent is an important early step for prospective applicants interested in bringing new educational opportunities to Alabama’s students and families.

📅 Upcoming Key Dates:

📌 November 2, 2026: Preferred Letter of Intent Deadline

📌 January 4, 2027: Application Released

📌 March 15, 2027: Application Submission Deadline

📌 May 10, 2027: Final Application Decisions

🔍 CSP ACCOUNTABILITY: Who makes sure the funds are used responsibly?
The work doesn't stop when a grant is awarded! The Alabama Public Charter School Commission's CSP team provides oversight and technical assistance throughout the subgrant period. Through financial reviews, documentation requirements, and monitoring, we help ensure that awarded resources are used in accordance with applicable grant requirements. Accountability matters because these investments are intended to support meaningful educational opportunities for Alabama students.

📚 BEHIND THE GRANT: Where can CSP dollars go?
CSP funding can help eligible charter schools prepare for opening, support approved expansion activities, and invest in resources needed for implementation.
Depending on the grant type and approved budget, eligible expenses may include:
📖 Instructional materials and curriculum
💻 Educational technology
👥 Professional development and staff preparation
🏫 Approved school readiness expenses
Every purchase must meet applicable federal requirements and align with the school's approved grant activities.

💰 CSP EXPLAINED: How does grant funding work?
Did you know that receiving a CSP Grant award doesn't mean a school receives the entire award amount immediately?
Under Alabama's CSP subgrant reimbursement process, schools submit draw requests for eligible, approved expenditures.
The CSP team reviews supporting documentation to help ensure purchases align with approved budgets and applicable grant requirements.
It's one of the ways we work to promote responsible stewardship of federal education funding.

APCSC had the pleasure of connecting with educators, school leaders, and education partners during the New Schools for Alabama (NSFA) Conference!

During our session, “The Charter Commission: Lessons, Challenges, and Opportunities,” we enjoyed sharing more about the Commission, our mission, and the important work we do to authorize, support, and oversee high quality public charter schools across Alabama.

From reflecting on lessons learned to discussing challenges and exploring opportunities for continued growth, the session provided a valuable opportunity to exchange perspectives and strengthen our shared understanding of public charter education.
