We participated in STEAM night at the Mountain Green Elementary School last Monday. Our volunteer firefighters demonstrated fire science and showed our “toys” with science and technology themes (I.e. hazardous gas meters, thermal imaging cameras, etc) Lots of fun and interesting stuff.

“Burn barrels” are illegal in Morgan County and elsewhere, because they can easily start other fires. They burn much less efficiently, causing toxic fumes including dioxins. Mountain Green Fire responded yesterday to assist Morgan Fire&EMS on a call where an ATV caught fire when a burn barrel “got away” from the owner. The ATV was a total loss, and the mower and travel trailer were also damaged. Firefighters also had to build a dam to contain fuel runoff from the ATV. The open burn window only has 2 weeks left. You must obtain a free burn permit, which will allow the Fire Department to assess what you you are asking permission to burn, and make sure your burn will be done in a safe manner.

A crash occurred in backed-up traffic due to construction on I-84. The new bridge is open and all traffic is being diverted to it in both directions over the next 3 days. This wreck was westbound yesterday at 6pm. There have been other crashes, but not as serious. This one resulted in deployment of Mountain Green Fire Engine 131’s heavy rescue tools (“Jaws”) and a life threatening injury was transported by Morgan Fire&EMS and Ogden Paramedics. Use caution in both directions when approaching the construction. To the folks who live here, you know where the construction will be until at least 2028. Expect backups where there haven’t been in the past (i.e. Old Highway). Please, slow down.

Electrical multi-plug power strips are responsible for over 4600 home fires every year, resulting in over 70 deaths, including the tragic fire last week in Riverdale that killed 5. 60% of home fire deaths occurred in homes with no smoke alarms or with malfunctioning alarms. (There is no report of smoke detector status in the Riverdale house but people were trapped upstairs by the fire in the living room.) We must learn from history or we are doomed to repeat it. What can we do?

Don’t overload strip plugs. Use them for low voltage applications as intended, or as surge protectors if so equipped. Keep them accessible and in view. Don’t fill every plug! Get rid of them after a few years; just because it “looks ok”, doesn’t mean it isn’t full of dust that could contribute to a fire, or the wiring isn’t becoming brittle. Look for the UL or European Testing lab mark, and date of manufacture.

Smoke alarms are NOT good forever. They have a 10-year life expectancy, as the smoke-detecting isotope inside degrades. “New” houses, their detectors do go bad. Sometimes the detectors have a mechanical issue. Change all your detectors at the same time. Change your backup batteries when you change your clocks. (or twice a year, if we stop doing that ). Please be safe.

A small grass fire at the Mountain Green airport yesterday was kept small by quick actions: quick reporting by the asphalt crew that accidentally started it and by passers-by, quick reaction by two firefighters who happened to be at the airport (one of our firefighters off duty, and a USFS Wasatch Helitack member who was waiting for his crew), and quick response by Mountain Green Brush131 and 132. So quick that the other assist units from Morgan and Weber Huntsville 65 were quickly cancelled. Planes were threatened, but saved by quick action. Fire extinguishers are the quick “first aid” appliance of firefighters, and one was put to good use here by our off duty firefighter Tim.
It is still SUPER DRY here, despite restrictions being relaxed “some”(we are still in State Stage 1 Fire Restrictions). Be careful, even “normal” things are starting fires (w**d whackers, lawn mowers, chains, etc.)
Nice, quick work by all.

The “Broad” Fire is burning at the mouth of Weber Canyon about 3.5 miles from Mountain Green, between US89 and the power plant. Aside from the normal closer fire department units like Weber, Mountain Green, South Weber, Layton and South Ogden, many, many other Initial Attack resources were called from as far away as South Davis, Farmington, North Summit, Kaysville, Hill AFB, Clinton City and Riverdale. Washington Terrace and Roy are helping too. Significant US Forest Service, State DNR and BLM units are also working, including Alta HotShots. The majority of the fire has gone straight up the mountain on the north side of the canyon into the rocky draws and canyons several thousand feet up. Fire on the South side of I-84 and along the railroad on the north side has been stopped. The fire up on the mountain has been significantly slowed, and air assets are continuing to make very good headway. A large Type 1 Helicopter and 2 smaller Type 3’s are making continuous drops, and a Large Air Tanker (commercial jet size) has dropped retardant lines. 2 Single Engine Attack Tankers (SEATS), the fighter planes of aerial firefighting, are making runs to slow the fire. I-84 will remain closed for at least a few hours longer, with lane closures likely overnight. No evacuations are anticipated. Mountain Green Fire Units have been released to respond on other calls in Morgan, and since being released have responded to several auto accidents in the traffic backups on I-84 and on Trappers Loop. Cooler temps tonight will continue to slow the fire, and resources will continue tomorrow with mop up. Busy day! Busy year!

It isn’t the sexiest thing we do, but training is a constant for our volunteers. They sharpen their Fire and EMS skills every Thursday night, on every possible topic. These pictures encompass about a year’s worth of training. Your firefighters are dedicated, well trained men and women who want to serve their community. Thanks for everything you do volunteers!!
