Please help us welcome Anne Reed, who is joining the flock as a seasonal outdoor educator.

A former teacher from Ohio, Anne has lived in Southwest Florida since 2012 and has worked as a journalist, educator, and communications manager. She is excited to join Audubon and share her love for the flora and fauna of Southwest Florida with students of all ages. She has three daughters, two dogs, and is an endurance athlete who loves traveling, camping, and hiking.

Welcome, Anne!

See you later? How about tomorrow?

Young American alligators continue to hang out in plain sight on logs alongside our boardwalk, especially in the vicinity of the Lettuce Lakes. This photo is from yesterday.

Did you know?

Hatchlings are about seven inches long and stay with their mothers for up to two years as they grow. A group of alligator hatchlings is called a pod.

Young alligators are gray with bright yellow bands, blending in with their surroundings to make it harder for predators to spot them. They eat small fish, crayfish, and amphibians.

There are only a few spots left on our next Sunset Stroll, coming up tomorrow evening.

This naturalist-guided boardwalk tour leads you into the swamp as the day draws to a close. As twilight approaches, many creatures are winding down their day as nocturnal creatures are beginning theirs.

Watch sunset from the observation platform, then listen to the changes in sounds as the day changes to night. Search for nocturnal creatures on the way back to the visitor center, and learn about some of their adaptations that enable them to be nocturnal. For the last half hour of this tour, it will be fairly dark, but that will make for good night sky viewing on clear nights.

We are looking forward to hosting our new art exhibit next week!

The exhibit, which will be set up along the boardwalk, features photos from Mac Stone’s latest book, Cypress: The Last Old-Growth Swamps, and brings large-format photography into the landscape that inspired it.

On view from October 27 through March 31, 2027, this exhibit features more than 50 prints mounted along the boardwalk and is included with admission.

Read more about it at the link in our Facebook profile.

If you're lucky, you may hear one of these beautiful birds hooting near the boardwalk! 🦉 Barred Owls (Strix varia) prefer mature forests with trees that have cavities for nesting and an abundance of prey. As they scan their surroundings using both sight and sound to locate prey, they perch and wait for the perfect moment to strike. This Barred Owl appears to be hunting in the water, looking for prey to grab with its powerful talons!

While the southeastern sunflowers are a stunning seasonal highlight, a vibrant mix of other plant species also bloom in the fall across the Sanctuary. This rich floral diversity plays a crucial role in supporting a healthy, interconnected web of native insects, birds, and other wildlife. 📷: Audubon staff/Allyson Webb

What do we have here? This pair of Red-shouldered Hawks seems to be bonding in anticipation of breeding. We typically see a few nests near the boardwalk each spring. Video by Jen Feuerstein, volunteer and membership assistant.
