This American Red Cross hat and cotton smock (1917-1919) belonged to Maggie Sinclair Craig of Franklin, Tennessee. She wore this uniform during her service in the Davidson County American Red Cross Canteen during World War I. Women in these canteen groups distributed food and refreshments to allied soldiers, both at home and abroad, and were positioned along railway junctions as well as near the front lines. During World War I, more than 55,000 women volunteered with the canteens, with a total of over eight million women serving in various roles with the American Red Cross.
Craig was a small woman of five feet tall. She grew up in Franklin, born there on January 1, 1870. She was a very active gardener, and was a member of the Garden Study Club. She acted as treasurer of that organization when they produced the book, "Homes and Gardens of Tennessee." Craig passed away on November 23, 1945. See her uniform on display now in our "Change and Challenge" exhibition.
