Observations in the orchard:

Biology in our orchard soil is expressed by the presence of Pisolithus tinctorius, also known as Bohemian truffle, Dead man's foot, or horse dung fungus. This fungus "positively influences the growth and nutrient acquisition of host plants, enhancing their performance and tolerance to environmental stresses." How are the pecans separated from the "trash" that is collected from the harvester?

The pecans that were collected by the harvester and put into the burlap bags are transferred to the front end loader of the small tractor. The pecans are then dropped into the hopper of the pre-cleaner. The pre-cleaner's job is to blow out light items such as shucks, leaves and small sticks so mostly pecans remain. Anything the blower does not blow out will ride an inspection table where a person will pick out pecans with green shucks, rocks and anything that is not a good pecan. Good pecans will drop into a burlap bag where they will dry for a week or two before they are sanitized and start their cracking and shelling journey. Stay turned!

How are the pecans picked up?

After the pecans are shaken from the trees, sticks are picked up and the pecans are raked away from the trunk of the tree.

The harvester is attached to a small tractor (so the height of the tractor does not break the lower branches). The harvester is offset from the tractor so the tires of the tractor do not crush the pecans as it circles the trees. The tractor and harvester make a wide circle that gets tighter and tighter around the tree. The harvester picks up everything in its path. The heavier items (pecans) are dropped in a burlap bag while the light items (leaves and dirt) blow out the back.

How do the pecans come off the trees?

We don't wait for the pecans to fall off the trees because the critters will eat the pecans as they drop and those not immediately eaten would be sitting on moist ground too long so they might even sprout and be ruined.

The shaker is a heavy piece of equipment that is attached to the back of a large tractor. The shaker's job is to hug the lower truck of the pecan tree and vibrate the tree vigorously so that the pecans fall off.

The next piece of equipment used will be the harvester which will pick up the pecans.

Employee appreciation and spotlight. Our attention has been on harvest preparation, but we don't want to overlook the hard work our miniature Hereford steers have done to help improve our soil for the pecan trees so our soil, trees, and pecans are the healthiest they can be. , , , , , , ,
