Traffic Alert

Traffic patterns are changing as construction progresses for U.S. 70 Improvements in James City. Drivers traveling on Old Cherry Point Road to the east of or near Grantham Road are encouraged to access U.S. 70 at Grantham Road whenever possible, instead of at Airport Road or Williams Road. The traffic signal at Grantham Road and U.S. 70 allows for quicker access to U.S. 70 and is designed to handle more traffic. Using this route will help reduce traffic on Old Cherry Point Road.

Slocum Gate will close at 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 9, 2026, for scheduled maintenance and will remain closed throughout the weekend. During the closure, visitors and personnel should use the Main Gate for inbound and outbound access. Slocum Gate will reopen and resume normal operating hours at 6 a.m., Monday, Oct. 12.

Craven Area Rural Transit System (CARTS) is announcing service improvements beginning Thursday, October 1, 2026. The updates include improvements to fixed routes and expanded same-day ride options.

CARTS is updating its fixed-route service. These improvements will introduce hourly pickup times, streamline routes by removing underutilized stops, and provide more direct service to key CARTS destinations. A new pickup location will be added at the New Bern Mall at the main entrance between Annabelle’s and Buffalo Wild Wings. Fixed-route fares will remain $1 per passenger, with service operating Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Additionally, CARTS is launching OnDemand+, a same-day ride program offering quick, flexible transportation throughout much of New Bern. Similar to a taxi service, passengers may request a ride, and a nearby CARTS driver will be dispatched to assist. Same-day rides will be available from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, with a fare of $5 per ride.

Both service changes will take effect on Thursday, October 1, 2026. You can see the updated fixed route schedule and find more information on OnDemand services at https://www.cravencountync.gov/2582/Craven-County.

Traffic Alert

Starting at 6:30 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 26, one lane of U.S. 70 Westbound will be closed to the west of Thurman Road for road construction until 7 p.m.

Starting at 6 a.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 26, one lane of U.S. 70 Westbound will be closed between Airport Road and Elder Street for barrier installation until 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27.

Please pay close attention to posted signs for directions and be cautious as you drive through these active construction zones. All work is weather dependent.

Changes are coming to the CARTS fixed route system on October 1. The routes are changing to better serve passengers by reducing wait times at stops and creating more predictable pickup times. Fares will remain $1 to ride. One stop is being added at the New Bern Mall as a result of the change. You can find the new pickup times on the CARTS website or call CARTS for additional information.
