FRAUD ALERT: GOVERNMENT IMPERSONATION SCAMS

Government impersonation scams have been prevalent in Middlesex County. Fraud is constantly evolving with the advent of cryptocurrency and payment applications. Scammers often utilize a phone call but also use email, text messages, social media messages or U.S. mail to pretend to be an agency or organization to gain your trust.

To protect yourself and others from these scams, consider the following:

Federal, State, and Local law enforcement will NEVER ask for payments

Government Entities will NEVER ask for payments over the phone and will not send individuals to your house to collect money.

You will NEVER be told NOT to tell family and/or law enforcement – If you are being told to stay on the phone and not tell anyone END THE CALL.

Never provide money to strangers – DO NOT provide cash, gift cards, gold bars or cryptocurrency payments.

Avoid Sharing Information – DO NOT provide your personal information, driver’s license number, social security number or bank account information.

End the Call – Scammers can spoof the number of a law enforcement agency. Obtain the caller’s name and end the call. Then call back the agency to verify the legitimacy of the phone call.

Call 911 – If someone is at your residence and requires cash payment, or you are told not to call local police or family members, CALL 911.
Block any phone numbers and send emails to junk for any suspected fraud attempts.

ARREST WARRANT SCAM

Scammers are emailing and texting pictures of real and doctored law enforcement credentials and badges in an attempt to ‘prove’ they are legitimate to scam you out of money. They will threaten an arrest, fines, or other penalties to scare you into immediate action. The scammer may also provide you a code or password to provide to the impersonating ‘law enforcement agent’ or courier that will arrive at your residence. Versions of this scam include but are not limited to:

A package that was seized with your name on it and they need your driver’s license
and money to fix the issue.

An investigation into failure to show up to a criminal case regarding a jury summons which led to an arrest warrant being issued in your name.

CSAM (child sexual abuse material) was located in your email or computer and payment will resolve this matter.

Payments from your bank account have been linked to narcotics sales in other countries and you need to pay fines to the government to avoid further issues.

Overdue/outstanding EZ Pass payments that need to be collected

SURROGATE’S OFFICE AND PROBATE COURT SCAM

Residents have who have had recent real estate matters have received calls from individuals impersonating the Middlesex County Surrogate’s Office and/or Probate Court. The impersonators have advised there has been an issue with their application and require additional fees and payments. The impersonators have also posed as attorneys, debt collectors and estate service providers who demand immediate payment with fraudulent fees. They will threaten legal action or frozen assets.

Contact the Surrogate’s Office directly at 732-745-3055, not the phone number the impersonator provides you. Consult estate attorneys before making payments.

Please call 9-1-1 or your local police department if you believe you are being victimized. FRAUD ALERT: BACK TO SCHOOL SCAMS

The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office has been made aware of an online scam targeting students as they return to school. Scammers are creating look-a-like apps that when downloaded will generate a pop-up notification that the student’s device has been infected with malware. The notification instructs the student to call a phone number so that the device can be scanned. The scammer will suggest calling another number for “Customer Support”. The second caller will ask for passwords and online banking information.

To protect yourself and others from these scams, consider the following:

If an app download prompts your device with a warning screen that there is a virus, turn off the device and disable internet access.

DO NOT call any numbers the pop up provides. Contact your school IT staff.

IF YOU DO CALL THE NUMBER, DO NOT provide your name, banking information, social security number, copies of government-issued identifications or other information. This can be utilized to compromise your accounts and incur financial losses.

END THE CALL – Apple Support will not ask for personal identifying information, passwords to social media apps, or online banking information.

VERIFY THE DOWNLOAD LINK - Be cautious before downloading apps and/or app extension. Links may be created to appear it is a common app so that scammers can install malware on your device.

IF YOU DO PROVIDE PERSONAL INFORMATION, please report this to campus security, the IT department and a local police department.

BLOCK ANY PHONE NUMBERS AND/OR REPORT TEXTS AS JUNK/SPAM

Please call the non-emergency number to your campus security or your local police department if you believe you are being victimized. You can also report scams to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) https://www.ic3.gov.

🇺🇸 25 Years. Never Forgotten.

Today, we remember September 11, 2001, and the countless lives lost that day. We honor the courage and sacrifice of the first responders who ran toward danger, the service members who answered the call, and the countless families and communities forever changed.

Twenty-five years later, their stories, their courage, and their legacy remain with us.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Big thanks to the North Brunswick Township Early Childhood Center for having us! 💙 We had a wonderful time meeting incoming preschool parents and families to share all about our Public Safety Alliance for Individuals with Disabilities (PS AID) program.

PS AID is a free, voluntary service open to anyone who lives, works, or attends school in Middlesex County. The database provides first responders with crucial information—like emergency contacts, photos, and specific impairment details—so they can better assist enrollees in an emergency or during a police encounter.

Individuals can enroll themselves or be registered by a family member or caregiver.

FRAUD ALERT: EMPLOYMENT SCAMS

In 2025, U.S. employers laid off more than 1.17 million workers. Scammers have taken advantage of this fact by targeting job seekers with employment scams. Fraudsters create fake job advertisements on social media, online marketplaces, and job search websites. Some scammers also impersonate legitimate staffing agencies and companies with the same common goal: To obtain personal information and/or access to financial assets. For example: Scammers may falsely claim to represent a well-known company, such as Walmart, and direct applicants to a fraudulent website that appears legitimate.

To protect yourself and others from these scams, consider the following:

If an online advertisement promises unusually high pay for little work, it is most likely a scam.
DO NOT send money or pay any fee to apply for a job or an interview.
DO NOT provide your banking information, social security number, copies of government-issued identifications or other information before validating the source.
Be cautious of employers that offer you a job without conducting an interview.
Research the company independently and verify that the recruiter or hiring manager is affiliated with the organization by utilizing official contact information.
Even reputable job search websites like LinkedIn and Indeed can and do contain fraudulent job postings.

If you believe you have been targeted by an employment scam, stop communicating with the suspected scammer, preserve all emails, text messages, and job postings and report it to your local police department. You can also report scams to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) https://reportfraud.ftc.gov and/or the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) https://www.ic3.gov.
