PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT
BAT TESTS POSITIVE FOR RABIES IN NORTH STONINGTON
A BAT FOUND ON ANTHONY ROAD IN THE TOWN OF NORTH STONINGTON WAS TESTED AND FOUND TO BE POSITIVE FOR RABIES ON JUNE 1, 2026.
Rabies is a deadly disease caused by a virus that can infect all warm-blooded animals, including people. It is spread mostly by wild animals, but unvaccinated cats and dogs may also become infected and spread the virus. The rabies virus lives in the saliva and brain tissue of infected animals. Rabies can be spread by scratches from infected animals or when infected saliva comes into contact with open wounds, breaks in the skin or mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth, etc.)
DO YOUR PART!
• Refrain from feeding or approaching any wild or stray animals
• Keep your pets up to date on their rabies vaccines
• Limit your pets unsupervised time outside
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Ledge Light Health District at 860-448-4882 or NORTH STONINGTON ANIMAL CONTROL at 860-287-2197.

This guy has the right idea! It's going to be H-O-T hot today! Even though we will benefit from the shoreline breeze it's still important to take care of ourselves by staying hydrated and taking a/c or shade breaks if we have to be outside. It's especially important to pay attention for signs of heat exhaustion today since our bodies are not used to this weather!
