The most important region for Areni Noir is Vayots Dzor where the best quality grapes are made into varietal wine. The wines have medium to high acidity + medium tannins. The wines are medium bodied + have a silky texture. Areni Noir has a nose of red + black fruits with hints of cassis + spice. On the palate you will find cherry, raspberry + blackberry. Oak aging adds vanilla + smoky notes.

The wines have ABV of 13-14.5%. Most Areni Noir wines are drunk a few years after release, but the best quality wines can improve + gain in complexity for a decade or more.

The Areni Noir grape is believed to have come from the village of Areni in Southwest Armenia, thus its name. In 2011 an incredible discovery was made in a cave above the village. During excavations archaeologists discovered the oldest known winery in the world. Analysis of grape seeds + stems found in the cave indicated that the winery was at least 6,100 years old. As the winery was very well developed it suggests winemaking in the region began even earlier.

Traditional winemaking in Armenia uses clay amphorae (karasi in Armenian) for both fermentation and aging. The amphorae are buried just below the surface with an opening left at ground level to insure even temperatures. Areni Noir was virtually unheard of in the international market until 2012 when a varietal Areni Noir landed on Bloomberg's “Top ten wines of 2012” list. In recent decades there has been significant investment from abroad in the development of modern wineries.

Areni Noir is a dark skinned grape variety used to make full bodied red wines in the Trans-Caucasus, primarily in Armenia. This thick skinned grape is extremely disease resistant + well adapted to the strong diurnal variations of temperature in the region. This is an important quality for grapes cultivated in harsh conditions like those in the Trans-Caucasus where daytime temperatures can exceed 100 degrees + drop to 70 degrees soon after dusk. The thick skin not only maintains the grapes structural integrity but also helps to retain a degree of elegance and freshness.

Areni Noir is a largely unknown ancient grape variety that has a unique place in human history as it recalls the very origins of winemaking. Armenia is a very ancient country with deep traditions going back thousands of years. Legend has it that Noah’s ark came to rest on Mount Ararat. Mount Ararat was at one time located in Armenia, but today is just across the border in Turkey. The Bible says when Noah descended from the mountain he planted the first vines + made wine from them.

On the nose you will find perfumes of herbs, flowers + spicy aromas. On the palate you can taste cherry, raspberry, red currant, coffee, spices, to***co + leather. The wines have ABV of 11.5-13.5%

Gaglioppo has been rising in popularity as wine drinkers internationally have had more access to these wines. The grape was long disdained, as sadly was the case with many Italian wines, since the focus was on sheer quantity as opposed to quality. The new generation of Calabrian winemakers known as the “Ciro Boys” have worked very hard to raise the level of regional winemaking + the quality of the wines.

The wine pairs well with pasta bolognese, spaghetti pomodoro, Margherita pizza, porchetta, lasagna, meatballs, risotto, salami, ham, sausages, barbecue, eggplant parmigiana, lamb chops, grilled + roasted meats as well as mature cheeses.

In Ciro, Gaglioppo vines are grown at high altitudes to protect the grapes from the hot southern Italian climate. Many of today's producers pick early in the season to retain good levels of acidity + prevent the fruit from tasting too jammy when vinified. Gaglioppo grapes are naturally high in tannins, so it is important that great care is taken in the vinification process to tame these tannins. To do this the wines are aged in small + large oak barrels. Rosso Classico is aged for seven months in oak and Riserva for 26 months. Today's newer producers are aging their wines for three to four years before bottling.

Gaglioppo is a southern Italian grape variety best known for producing soft red wines from the mountainous Ciro DOC in Calabria, the toe of Italy’s boot. This grape variety is the flagship grape of the region and is produced primarily as a varietal wine. Gaglioppo is a dry red wine with medium body, medium color + lively acidity.

There are many theories as to the origin of Gaglioppo. The traditional one being that the grapes arrived with the ancient Greeks. Recent DNA testing suggests that it is actually a descendant of Sangiovese. The third popular theory combines the first two stating that it is a result of cross pollination between Sangiovese and an unknown Greek variety.

It’s hardiness and ability to tolerate cold temperatures made it quite suitable for the cooler regions of the United States + Canada, many of which were just starting to realize their ability to produce quality wines. Baco Noir is a very productive vine that needs to be managed in the vineyard to reduce yields ensuring high quality wines.

Baco Noir can be used in blends but the best are made into varietal wines. The grapes produce highly pigmented wines with an attractive deep color tint. The wines have aromas of black fruits + ripe plum along with coffee, to***co, vanilla + earthy as well as smoky notes. On the palate you will find fruit flavors of blackberry, black cherries, plums + dark chocolate. The wines are medium bodied + low in tannins. As the wines have high acidity they do well with oak aging to develop a smooth style profile. Baco Noir has between 12-13.5% ABV. Most Baco Noirs should be drunk soon after release but the best improve considerably after five years.
