Founded in 1870, St. John's is a private university spread over 102 acres in Queens. St. John's accepted the NYC Carbon Challenge in 2007 and after reducing its initial emissions 30% by 2016, the institution continues to participate in the Challenge and has committed to a 40% carbon reduction by 2030.

St. John's is planning to meet its carbon reduction goals by including renewable energy sources such as geothermal and solar power while also incorporating chilled water generation for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning and domestic hot water generation.
