Payment for Placements (P4P) chapter at the University of Pennsylvania, under the national union which advocates for MSW students, has been working in partnership with the National Association of Social Work and National P4P to develop a survey to assess the financial stress and well-being of social work students. Our work is grounded in a commitment to racial, economic, and gender justice, recognizing that greater financial support for students ultimately expands access to the profession and helps ensure it reflects the diversity of the communities we serve. Given the significant gap in U.S.-based research on this topic, we hope our findings will draw greater attention to the experiences and needs of social work students.

Join C.A.R.E.S. and the Payment for Placements (P4P)–NY Coalition for a critical discussion on the systemic issue of unpaid social work internships. These unpaid placements represent a significant barrier to entry and equity, impacting the diversity and sustainability of our profession.

We are honored to host alongside panelists Tyree Grant, LCSW, SIFI, and Olivia Watts, MSW. The discussion will be expertly facilitated by Pilar O. Bonilla, MSW. Together, we will explore the growing movement to secure compensation for social work student interns, examine the professional implications of unpaid labor, and highlight legislative solutions, including NYS bill S.7894, which proposes a pilot program to fund MSW students across New York State.
