Mossy Mire

Sphagnum moss, often the dominant vegetation in a mire, exhibits remarkable water retention capabilities. Its specialized cells can hold twenty times its dry weight in water, which helps regulate the hydrology of the wetland and maintains the saturated conditions.

A Mossy Mire is a type of wetland characterized by waterlogged, acidic conditions and a substrate composed primarily of accumulated peat. This dense, partially decayed organic matter forms because the anaerobic environment severely inhibits microbial decomposition.
